If Lynn Fitch wins the Attorney's General office in Mississippi as expected, she will be the first republican Attorney general of the state since 1873! Has there ever been another statewide office with a one party streak this long?

I think the North Carolina Secretary of State office also has a huge Dem streak just as long as the Mississippi Attorney General streak, and its still running healthy.

I just checked. The North Carolina Secretary of State's office was held by populist party member Cyrus Thompson from 1897-1901.

Also he defeated the official democratic candidate, incumbent Charles Cooke, so it counts as a loss for the dems. Still an impressive streak though.

Its also of note that Republicans have not been able to win any downballot statewide office elections (either the Attorney General or the State Comptroller) for over a century at this point.

The Interesting one here is the North Carolina Attorney General's office
James Carson was the last republican to serve in 1974, but was appointed and lost his election for a full term.

The last republican actually elected to the office was Zeb Walser in 1896. He resigned and was replaced by another republican Robert Dick Douglas, who only served for the rest of his term.

Arkansas hasn't had a Republican attorney general until very recently.

I think the KY AG has been Democrat ever since the 1950s, though that is likely to change if Cameron does well enough.

It definitely will change. I've predicted that the Republicans will sweep all statewide offices in Kentucky this year.

A lot of the Southern streaks depend on whether you count the appointed offices in the Reconstruction era. In terms of present-day streaks, I imagine any others that meet or exceed the MS AG's streak have already been mentioned.

As of now, the MS AG race will finish with at least 146 years of Democratic control, but a more prominent statewide office - Governor of Georgia - was held by Democrats for 150 years (at least in terms of elected terms; 1853-2003).

There are other less clear examples as well. For GA's Attorney General, it's hard to say (given that there were no AGs with formally declared political affiliations from 1834-1868), but this office was held by Democrats from 1872 to 2011 (139 years), with the last publicly identified (non-Reconstruction) AG with partisan affiliation being a Democrat, from 1831-1834. It's not a stretch to assume that a continuous line of Democrats from 1831-2011 (180 years) held this particular office, though not all explicitly as "Democrats".

This thread is several years old but also has some data-points in it as well.
