Bonn Republic - these two are basically indistinguishable and go either way, although the Berlin Republic has the unfortunate attempt at integrating in the old DDR/

Weimar Republic - had some good times, although had to many non-democrats to function and had that terrible Presidential rule clause in the constitution


DDR - Stalinist state, unpleasant even by Warsaw Pact standards

German Empire - hideously warlike, aristocratic and so on. It was funny that they btfo Napoleon's moronic nephew, but they still basically fostered its satanic child...

Well technically, the Weimar Republic was called the German Empire too (Deutsches Reich), but if we are going by technicality, he mentioned the "Republic of Germany" which does not and has never existed, he used the term "Government" when he should have used the term "state", and the current German State and West Germany are the same from a constitutional standpoint. But with this poster one cannot expect much when it comes to Europe, so whatever.

I agree that "Republic of Germany" is indeed a very odd term which has never been used in that manner.

The official name of the German state during the Weimar Republic was still "German Empire", although "German Republic" was also in common use at the time. And the current German state is called the "Federal Republic of Germany", as was West Germany.


My ranking would be:

1) West Germany/Reunified Germany (1949- )
(since it is the same government operating under the same constitution with the only differences being that West Germany consisted of only 10/11 states instead of 16 and the capital was located in Bonn instead of Berlin)

2) post-Communist East Germany (1989-90)
(it was only a very short-lived and tumultuous period of history, but roughly from December 1989 to October 1990 East Germany operated as an increasingly democratic government)

3) Weimar Republic (1918-1933)

4) North German Confederation (1867-1871)

5) German Empire (1871-1918)

6) East Germany under communist rule (1949-1989)

7) Nazi Germany, obviously (1933-1945)
