If you are talking about it in the context of a situation I think you should just say the word. Trying to soften it by saying "the n-word" doesn't serve any purpose in making it better. Calling someone out of their name is different than telling story. When I spoke a university earlier this year I said the word when discussing Lee Atwater's strategy and no one was upset by it.
