Portland would no doubt be *culturally bizarre* for me (weird, granola liberalism to the extreme except tenfold and without some well-grounded normalcy of the Midwest), but I could never live in a non-beach place that seems to have more of a tourist vibe than a locals vibe like Las Vegas.  Even being in Nashville at the end of August, I found myself thinking how bizarre it'd be living in a city like that ... seemed 75% of the people out and about on Friday and Saturday night were very clearly visiting town.

This is a hard one, I'd hate living in either one.

Unlike with the NJ vs FL thread where I'd be fine with living in either one.

If I had to pick, maybe Portland for the climate.

Las Vegas is the best city environment out west. I considered excepting San Diego. Each has different great things about them. I think I would fare better in Las Vegas, but I would understand why someone could argue for San Diego. (I'd also like to visit Missoula before saying this for certain, but again, this is a case of different good things.)

I would rather live around sh**tty white people trying to direct traffic to end racism than a place God clearly never intended humans to live.

Vegas is fun for vacations and all but Portland is a far better place to live. Saying this from personal experience.

Having lived in Vegas for a decade, I can tell you these statements aren't particularly accurate.  There are two million locals, and for the most part very few of them spend any leisure time anywhere near the Strip or Fremont.  Would New Yorkers hang out in Times Square all the time?

The rest of Las Vegas is pretty much Phoenix, albeit with a scattering of casinos here and there.  And don't just think that those are all about gambling... the 'residential' casinos are typically where the movie theaters and decent bars/restaurants are.  I'd be in a casino for one of those reasons roughly once a week, and I haven't gambled a dime since about 2011.
