The stolen lorry, a white Mercedes, rammed into eight cars that were queuing at traffic lights near the railway station in Limburg, a town in western Germany, "crushing them together". Police said in a statement: “Based on what we have learned and several witness accounts, the man seized control of the truck at about 5:20 pm (1520 GMT).”

German security authorities said they are treating the incident as a terror attack, according to ZDF.

But police have not yet confirmed links to terror - instead urging people not to speculate.

Anyway whether it was Islamism or not, Limburg dodged a bullet there. Ramming into Cars...If he had some competency he could have perpetrated a Massacre like in Nice. Luckily not.

I’m sorta surprised that the truck attack trend has mostly winded itself down. After Nice I thought it’d be a monthly occurrence and for a while it seemed to be true.

While it was a Syrian national on a truck ramage, the "terror link" part is as of this moment unconfirmed and highly speculative.

Zeit Online quotes the authorities in saying that - unlike the Breitscheidplatz terrorist from 2016 - they have so far no evidence of the perpetrator maintaining connections to the Islamist scene.

Tagesspiegel quotes the authorities in saying that they have doubts with regards to a possible Islamist motive, since the perpetrator is apparently suffering from a psychiatric condition.

How the perpetrator stole the truck:
The rightful truck driver's eyewitness account:
The truck was waiting in front of a red traffic light in Limburg. Suddenly, the perpetrator, whom the truck driver did not know, tore open the driver's door and stared at the driver with wide-open eyes. The truck driver said: "What do you want from me?", but the perpetrator didn't say a word. After the truck driver asked him again, the perpetrator dragged the driver out of the cab, got into the truck and drove off.

Information on the perpetrator:

• The 32-year-old Syrian has been living in Germany since 2015.
• His residence permit for Germany expired on 1st October. It is unknown whether he applied for an extension.
• According to his cousin, he has a job as a truck driver in Germany and already drove a truck when he still lived in Syria.
• Before the truck attack, the authorities had investigated him for grievous bodily harm, illegal possession of drugs and shoplifting.
• According to the authorities, he did not have any known contacts with militant Salafists.
• He is currently on remand.

What his cousin thinks:
The perpetrator's cousin, who is a Syrian living in Germany too, granted an interview to the local newspaper "Frankfurter Neue Presse". The cousin described the perpetrator as "not right in the head" (in German: "komisch im Kopf"), which he attributed to perpetrator's experiences in the Syrian Civil War. According to him, the perpetrator drank too much and took drugs. He condemned the perpetrator's criminal act: "He's no longer my cousin.", he said.
