Just breaking from CNN:

Jeanine Pirro, the long-time prosecutor who had been set to run against Sen. Hillary Clinton next year, has decided to drop out of the U.S. Senate race, a Republican party official said Wednesday.

Pirro instead will run for state attorney general.

Little bit of netroots rumors flying around.

The big one:  Bloomberg declares his candidacy the day after the NYC transit strike ends.

Why am I not surprised?  I wonder if she managed to keep all the pages of her withdrawal speech in one place.  If she's lucky, she could still put in a credible bid for state AG.

Anyways, here's hoping Bloomberg jumps in.  Or even Giuliani.

Too bad.

That "without a script, she's speechless" ad that the NY Democratic party put together after her initial announcement speech was hilarious.

Ah, well now there's a guarantee the AGship stays Dem.

Now time to laugh at whatever poor sap the NYGOP gets to take her place to get slaughtered.

Actually Bloomberg would be the best deal, since he wouldn't win, but he would do well enough to damage Hillary. Just keep her under 60.

YEEEEEHAW!

Unfortunately, we'll now have to deal with her as state AG for the next four years, but ah well...better than having to choose between Pirro and Clinton next year.  *shudders*

No, you won't. She'll lose that race as well.

There's no gurantee she wins the AG spot.

Quinnipiac:

#  Mark Green beats Pirro 43 - 35 percent;
# Andrew Cuomo beats Pirro 49 - 32 percent

From December 7 - 12, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,091 New York State registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. The survey includes 367 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 5.1 percent, and 479 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percent.

Ugh, I'd hate it if it was a Bloomberg vs. Clinton race but it won't happen anyway.

Hopefully Cox will jump back in. He's much better than Spencer.

If Bloomberg runs I will be so happy that I will need a new pair of pants.

I hope Hillary does badly. In fact, if it was possible (which it most likely isn't) I would rather see her lose and the Democrats drop a senate seat (they ain't gonna win the senate anyway) in exchange for a better presidential candidate.

I actually kindof liked Pirro; of course, I wouldn't vote for her over Hil, but I still liked her.
I hope Bloomberg doesn't run....

Point out for me where I said I wouldn't support Bloomberg over Clinton. Thanks.

I was not attacking you.

My point was that Bloomberg or Giuliani are the only two candidates able to topple Clinton (though current polls show she would still have a slight edge).  If the GOP puts up any other candidate, then Clinton keeps the seat.

That's all I was saying.

Bloomberg can't beat Hillary.  He'd make things interesting, but would still come up short.  The last poll that matched up Bloomberg vs Spitzer showed Sptizer cruising to victory.  I doubt he'd fair much better in a more partisan race against a more formidable candidate.

Giuliani was the only hope for the NY GOP in 2006.

Even then most polls showed Clinton beating Rudy.  Pirro had no chance, but neither does anyone else at this point.  Rudy would make it the closest, but even he would probably lose.  Also by staying in the race as long as she did making as many mistakes as she did Pirro really damaged her already tough chances for AG

Pirro really f&#ked up with her abortive senate run.

She would have had a far better shot at AG had she not run for senate first.  Getting chased out of one race is hardly a good entree to the next one.

I got a number of letters from Pirro looking for money, but I threw them in the trash.  Why waste my money on somebody who has no shot?

She blew her entry into the campaign.  Then she chooses to attack Hillary's husband.  Now you all know I'm hardly a fan of Hillary's husband, but when you have a husband who just got out of jail for tax evasion, fathered a child with another woman while married to you, and is suspected of passing confidential information from your prosecutor office on to the mob, it's probably best to stay off the topic of husbands.

Pirro could have been a good candidate against Hillary.  She's another bitchy, overambitious, cut-throat woman, and as such, she could have done a lot of damage to Hillary had she played her cards right.  It could have been like diamond cutting diamond.

Instead, she f$@ked up from the get-go, and now there's nobody to run against Hillary credibly.  Perhaps Bloomberg can be enticed, since he wouldn't have to give up his current job to do so, and can't run for mayor again anyway.  He also obviously has plenty of money to fund the whole thing.  Maybe they could make a deal that they'd put him up for governor in 4 years if he loses.  Barring a Giuliani run, that's the only option I can see.

And what's with all the plastic surgery Pirro had?  She looks absolutely hideous; everything about her looks fake.  She looks like a stereotypical close-in suburban New Yorker, in the worst sense of the word.

So who's the Dem candidate for AG? Whoever it is looks like just as much of a shoo-in as Spitzer is now.

Only way Bloomberg beats Clinton is if he runs to her left.

To be perfectly honest, I would consider voting for Bloomberg over Hillary, if only to hurt Hillary's chances to win the nomination in 2008.
