I prepared for Dorian decades ago by moving to South Carolina as a toddler.

I've followed hurricanes for a long time. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see this hit Cat 5. Most forecasts seem to underestimate what these storms reach. Florida is one of the most prepared areas in the world for these storms. Even so, I think that preparedness is about to be heavily tested. Of course, we all hope for the best, but also have to prepare for the worst.

FWIW I have a long ago rescheduled visit to Marco this week with a flight to Ft Myers tomorrow am. So far nothing's been cancelled and SW FL seems to be away from the path. I guess I'll see what things are like tomorrow.

Hurricane Dorian Now a Category 4; Prolonged Threat to Florida, Southeastern U.S. Possible

Given the warm water, it won't take much to get it to a category 5.  It already has sustained winds of 140 mph.

There would be far less damage after every hurricane in the US if people actually used bricks to make their houses instead of IKEA wood scraps...

My flight was fine and I now I'm on my way for a night and day in Key West before heading to Marco. I'll update with conditions as warranted.

Florida (at least) can breathe a sigh of relief, now that they are no longer in the bullseye.  It looks like Dorian is heading to Georgia and the Carolinas instead.

They shouldn't breathe easy just yet.  Models can shift back and forth several times.

Well sure, but from Florida's perspective at least this is looking less like Hurricane Andrew, and more like Hurricane Matthew.  Better a glancing blow than a full-on collision.

The threat of Dorian kept a lot of travelers off the Keys. The traffic was light and we could walk into a Key West restaurant at 8 pm on Sat of a holiday weekend without a reservation. I also met my personal goal of visiting the southernmost point of the continental US, after seeing the easternmost point in Apr.

In the areas we're talking about, most houses are made of concrete block, not wood...
