It feels wrong to call a child a FF or HP, just because journalists are dumber than the average rock, so they decide to make some random girl a global rockstar of environmentalism. Yes a Swedish cult have decided to push her as this rockstar, but it hadn’t happened without the media’s support.

BTW I’m pro-environmentalism.

I think very positively of what she's trying to accomplish even though some of her tactics and rhetoric are typical teenage histrionics. Voted FF because I'm generally in support of teenagers expressing themselves as long as they're not doing it in immoral or dangerous ways.

Or when nobody's willing to listen to arguments. (Not that they're willing to listen to Thunberg either so far.)

She's doing something about the biggest global threat to long term social, economic and political stability.

How about you?

FF.

Personal observation: While a couple of posters here have showed themselves annoyed over the supposed hype this person receives, nobody seems to be concerned about the at least equally excessive vitriol this girl receives particularly from the far-right which leads to me to the conclusion that Thunberg is not so much "overhyped" as she is for some reasons a polarizing figure. But maybe you're consuming the wrong media, are on the wong Facebook pages and have the wrong Facebook contacts for that. Only a couple of days ago I have read something along the lines of: "This retarded child - yes, retarded because Asperger is a disability, and judging by the looks of her she may suffer from the Down snydrome too - is totally overhyped by the media." More than anything else, I'm actually concerned that some day someone may attempt to assassinate her since she's as much a foil to project your hope onto as she's befome a foil to project your hatred onto. Someone who as of now I have decided to keep as a Facebook friend because she used to be a lot less dumber ten years ago before the rise of the AfD (note: NOT the one who orignated the aforementioned quote) is a particular offender of the latter.

So, in your opinion, did Malala Yousafzai win the Nobel peace prize because the women's rights movement in the Muslim world had "run out of arguments"?

The cult around her is annoying, but the massive hatred she's been getting from climate change deniers and fossil fuel apologists shows that she's doing the right thing. FF

I hate the fact that she is the latest socially awkward teenager to appropriate the autism label more than anything. Otherwise she’s just background noise to me.

She's doing something about the biggest global threat to long term social, economic and political stability.

How about you?

I find it very curious how a movement that purports the benefits of education frequently looks to children as leading figures. I'm not a fan of hers and I voted HP, but I also have sympathy as I see that she's being used by adults.

I'd have to be an ass to call an autistic sixteen-year-old terrified about the environment an HP. Much like the Parkland kids, I think she's being used by adults in a very cynical way.

The idea that’s now being peddled that fifteen year-olds are incable of having thoughts of their own is indredibly stupid. If she was, say, nine or something you might have a point, but at 15 most people who have defined political views are far beyond being carbon copies of their parents.

I am more sympathetic to this tactic in this case than I am in many others because a focus on the future is a core part of the political argument being made - ultimately, it is a play for empathy by putting a face to the consequences which the recipients may not themselves live to see.

Causes me to become slightly irate but nothing super passionate. That being said I have seen almost no evidence of a climate strike except from people complaining about her on the Twitter, so the side trying to demolish our way of life doesn't seem to be very effective.

So, in your opinion, did Malala Yousafzai win the Nobel peace prize because the women's rights movement in the Muslim world had "run out of arguments"?

Well, yes. They turned to an appeal to pathos because their other arguments weren't convincing people. In the case of women's rights, the arguments weren't convincing because they were trying to undo generations of repressive religious indoctrination, and that's not going to happen overnight. In the case of climate change, the arguments weren't convincing because nobody really agrees on what the science is telling us-- yes, climate change is anthropogenic, but some people are saying that we have fifty years to change our ways, while others are saying it's already too late to turn back. The lack of a single fixed time frame to structure the narrative around has left climate activism broken and unfocused.
