I've lived a "continental" life, so all three are acceptable and have been used by me at one point or the other.

I didn't even know that these words are synonyms.
Anyway, I call it soda.

Here's a map from 2003. What really stings in my eye is that the St. Louis Metropolitan area uses the same term as the Northeast and the Southwest. Does anyone have an explanation for that phenomena?

People who say "pop" should be gulaged

People who say "coke" when referring to any brand of soda should be shot out of a cannon into the sun

Pop is a sound, we forcibly corrected someone from IL in college about it. If he asked for a pop we made a popping sound. He started calling it soda like civilized people.

In all my time living in the south I've literally never heard this.

It's more of a Texas/interior South/non-coastal Deep South thing.  It's not as prevalent on the Atlantic Coast.  See that map that someone posted above.. I'd say that's reasonably accurate.

No one does this in VA (and not just NoVA, but the "Southern" parts of VA too).  Fairly rare in NC too (particularly the coastal areas).. the dividing line in that map above puts it at somewhere between SC and GA, which is consistent with my experience.

My home county is still an 80-100% coke range though. I live in the interior portion of SC. Granted, my family is not native to the area so we don’t speak with a southern dialect. But the people I know who are from native families all say soda and I’ve never been to a restaurant or anything and been asked if I want a “coke” referring to all sodas. Apparently these people exist but I haven’t found them.

Nah, no one here in this part of Texas says "Coke" ever, and there's Dr. Pepper everywhere.

We're always pretty strongly "coke" on the maps, but I do hear "soda" a decent amount and don't think anyone would blink when someone says it.  I don't ever hear people say "pop".  I'll say "coke" and "soda" interchangably, but I don't think I've ever said "pop" unless to make a joke about people saying it that way.

Saying the brand name is the correct way to say it.

I don't know what to tell ya man.  Maybe you just don't hang out around a lot of native Texans? What I can say is that pretty much every map I've ever seen on this includes almost the entire state in the "Coke" zone.  The map that was posted above, the map that was in that Upshot NYT dialect quiz that made the rounds several years back.. heck, go to google images search and do a search for "coke soda map" and you'll see basically every single one has all of TX in it.  I've lived in TX as well, and that was my experience (at least with people that grew up there).

Not that it matters or anything, but I'm gonna go ahead and go with the data on this, over your anecdotal post with no data.

In Canada, everybody says pop. You'll hear "soda" or "soda pop" maybe 5% of the time or less. "Coke" is used specifically for Coca-Cola cola varieties and once every once in a while you'll hear "Coke" to mean any cola in general (but NOT a non-cola pop like Sprite, 7-Up, Mountain Dew, etc).

Crap, I read this one time ... I honestly want to say it has something to do with the beer industry??  My native Peoria is also a soda enclave in Illinois, surrounded by “pop” sayers, so that’s what I grew up saying.

As for the OP, I find it weird, but regional dialects should be celebrated and protected to keep shlt interesting.

HP. As a born and bread Iowan and Midwesterner I say and always have said soda, no matter how regionally blasphemous it may be. I've also never liked soda for that matter.

I say "soda" in a "pop" region and nobody ever even looks at me funny for saying it.  I also seem to hear more people saying "soda", not sure if it's passed "pop" yet, probably not, but it does seem to be cathing on.

If you say "pop" in a "soda" region people WILL look at you funny if not ask you what the hell is wrong with you.

Horrible people in theory. I say "in theory" because I have never met any. Hell, I've never even met anyone who says "pop."
