Polls that matter will be in Jan, 2020; Warren has a real chance to upset Biden or Pete Buttigieg, its time for new leadership

Saturday, 9pm:

With Sunday left, about 70.000 votes will be cast.

It seems Biden had a really good Saturday start, while Pete had a strong afternoon/evening.

With 70.000 votes cast until tonight, this Iowa Straw Poll will have 1/3 of the expected Iowa Caucus turnout.

In 2008, about 240.000 peopled turned out in the Dem. IA caucus and 170.000 in 2016.

Quote from: Tender Branson except I screwed up the coding
Out-of-state adults of course can, but how many people outside of IA are visiting the state fair?

Probably a negligible number.

Hm, I think I have to disagree with you. I think about a third of those kernels were thrown in by non-Hawkeyes.

https://www.iowastatefair.org/about/fair-dates-attendance/

Quote
The State Fair is Iowa’s largest event, annually attracting visitors from all over the Midwest, as well as the rest of the U.S. and many foreign countries.

Just over three million people live in Iowa, and just over a million visited the state fair last year. Something tells me that includes tons of outsiders from Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, and Minnesota, but probably not a third. It'd be impossible to get a hard count.

Unless while in Iowa a bunch of them decided "well, now's my chance to vote in a real, competitive primary..."

Biden better watch out for Warren and Buttigieg, voters in 2004, 2008 and 2016 voted against the frontrunner. Buttigieg can do the unthinkable, win.

I have to admit that the Buttigieg 2nd-place position is impressive.
Very strange to me, and very interesting.

Mayor Pete's base is almost entirely white liberals, especially the Midwest. That makes him a good fit for Iowa and, to a lesser extent, New Hampshire. He needs to do well in both to survive.

No Source. I just assume that the candidates have their supporters bused to the fair site.

What on Earth is that all about?
What is it that they are trying to accomplish? Is it a health thing? Or are they just in need of major attention?

The Change Research poll had Warren ahead. The party extremes attend these rallies. The caucus, will put either Buttigieg or Warren ahead and Biden places third

I dunno. I mean what they want is clear but they were very disruptive about it. Although when one of them got into a fight with an old Trump supporter, it was pretty funny.

Every time I get on this forum I get excited because I see a new post in the primary polls tab, thinking it's a new qualifying poll, only to face inevitable disappointment and annoyance to see it's *ANOTHER* comment on a now 8 page long conversation about an unscientific corn kernel poll.

Things are slow right now.  The kernel poll has been about the only thing to talk about.

I was at the fair yesterday but couldn't find where the Kernel Poll was. I'm not sure who I would have cast my support for. Probably Yang or Tulsi. Maybe i'd vote twice.

It was around the opposite side of where the 27 degree beer stand was. It took me a while to find it too. (I voted for Bernie btw)

Almost the final results now (3 hours missing):

No change among the candidates, but Ds caught up with the Rs - confirming that the weekend vote leans D, while the weekday vote leans R.

It's hard to run as the not-X candidate when there are 20 non-X's.

PS: Let me remark that this topic about this unscientific fun poll is the most-viewed thread on this child board. Tongue

I just think it's interesting that people are acting like Warren is the 2nd coming in the primary, yet she's only 4% above Harris, who this isn't even supposed to be a theoretically great state for.

My experience is that they think circumcision is basically the male equivalent of female genital mutilation. They would maybe have some kind of point worth arguing if it wasn't clear that the subtext is "men have to put up with all the same problems as women and to suggest otherwise is to support female genital mutilation."

On the contrary, I find them both hilarious and gratifying.
