Bob Dole winning the Presidency probably would have been the last possible scenario for the Republican Party to not become fully Southernized, so it's not a completely insane statement.

Pretty ironic that the Republican Party becoming "fully Southernized" is what caused it to lose...Virginia.

The VAGOP didn't support Donald Trump or Corey Stewart. They just let Democrats run rampant and didn't care.

Such is what makes history so damn fascinating.

Minority coalitions generally don't have the organization numbers to overcome the majority unless they can break some group off and until that happens, VA is a blue state.

Because this answer is about as inane as the premise of this thread, which is that one individual can bring about the demise of an entire statewide party. VA has been trending Democratic since 2000 (if not earlier), and I seem to remember that Bush and Trump weren’t in the White House in 2000. Obviously some of the unpopular policies of the Bush administration only accelerated this trend, but Republicans were always living on borrowed time in Virginia.

These have to be worse ratings than Charlie Cook’s usual garbage

Ben Tribbett is an idiot and his Virginia legislature ratings far overestimate Republicans. It's best not to read too much into it.

Ben Tribbett was the only person who correctly predicted VA Dems' big gains in 2017.

Clinton would have won VA, but he sued the tobacco industry
He lost VA by only 4 points. Va had already elected Doug Wilder, the trend of CO was Dem, too, Clinton won that too, in 1992.

Altogether CO, VA and NV, during, the 1990's was D, but trended slower than IA and OH did, due to Bill Clinton's lawsuit against tobacco farmers in 1996.

Thats why Dubya defeated Kerry, eventhough, Edwards was on ticket from NC. Tobacco farmers were reeling, still from tobbacco lawsuit of 1996

Bush wasn't really responsible for Virginia's shift, he did win Virginia comfortably twice after all. Trump however has accelerated Virginia's trend and already done serious damage to the VA GOP. However most of the shift is not due to any one individual and also was partly accelerated by luck (if the polls weren't so off in 2014 or the GOP invested a bit more then Gillespie would have won and the GOP would still have a Sente seat in the state).

Here's VA PVI since 1996:

1996: R+10.45
2000: R+8.5
2004: R+5.8
2008: R+0.9
2012: Even
2016: D+3.2

and in 2020 it was +5.5 D so id say Bush probably gets slightly more blame than Trump here as it trended D more from 2000-2008 than 2012-2020

I am telling you the truth and no one believes me... that Virginia will vote Democrat in 2024 and probably in the 2023 elections as well.
