Usually restrictions on personal freedom, as opposed to restrictions on economic "freedom" (the freedom to exploit) are considered right-wing. In the case of gun control specifically, it seems clearly like a repressive right-wing policy that disarms the working class, while allowing only the police and military to have guns (or at least certain kinds of guns). The gun control laws that are already in place do things like shove poor minorities into the prison-industrial complex for being a "felon in possession of a firearm" and gun control advocates want those laws against "criminal backgrounds" made even stricter. The first modern gun control law was signed by Reagan in 1968 targeting the Black Panthers, and with the recent Dayton shooter calling himself a "leftist", it is obvious that there will be greater calls to disarm the left. Why is it considered leftwing to support this?

Because the Democrats, as our “left wing” alternative to the Republicans, supports it.

"those other guys are using this right more than we are, this right must be bad"  It's the same thing with freedom of speech.

Because guns are made by corporations.

Remember that the National Drinking Age Act, the Parents Music Resource Center, and zero tolerance schools were also considered “liberal”.

... as are solar panels, windmills, hair dyes, electric cars, "Coexist" bumper stickers, facial piercings, rolling papers, wooden sandals, shawls, soy milk, scented candles, and rubber dildos-- yet for some reason, the left seems to like all those. Weird.

Neither the right nor the left actually cares about principles or consistency.  It's about agreeing with your side and opposing the other side.

Rural people own more guns, you see, and rural people are the inbred, uncultured enemies of progress. Oh, and guns are scary and not "nice" and being "nice" and "tolerant" is really important to being cultured, proper, and respectable.

1. Harlon Carter murdered a hispanic teenager before he joined the NRA. When he joined, he pushed them to embrace right-wing politics.

2. “Soccer momism” has been considered “liberal” since the 1980s. When’s the last time you heard anyone say that anti-tobacco people aren’t “liberal”?

American gun culture is imbecilic and bourgeois , but gun possession - as distinct from gun 'ownership' - ought to be a central plank of any working-class platform.

Because in the US, the left is a lot more peace orientated. This, plus corporations making guns, and the overall gun affection that some republicans have.

This obsession with viewing politics through the lens of "freedom" in this or that "dimension" is an invention of politically illiterate American libertarians and should not be taken seriously by anyone who has even a cursory knowledge of political philosophy.

Although this is generally correct, I'm not really sure if it explains gun control, since based on my understanding the American right actually takes the more liberal stance on the issue.

Due to the rise of Nazis and Stalinism, the police state in Authoritarian govts keep the underprivileged with guns; as a result, 4 assasinated civil rights leaders: JFK; King, RFK and X were gunned down by the police state.

However, since 9-1-1, as a result of, minoritoes, blacks and Latinos are even more weary of police state. Due to Dubya's coziness with Bin Laden

In all seriousness, it comes down to culture.  Since guns are perceived to be part of traditional Americana, and macho guys hunt, conservatives like them.  Conservatives hate marijuana because of its association with the counterculture, and smoking weed was not something normal, retro Americans did in the 1950s.  Tobacco on the other hand...
