As introduced by Senator Al:

Protection Bill (Textiles, Clothing, Footwear & Steel)

1. Companies, co-operatives or self-employed individuals in the textiles, clothing, footwear and iron & steel industries shall receive a 5% cut in all federal taxes that that company, co-operative or individual pays.

2. Companies in the retail sector that only stock textiles, textile products and clothing made in Atlasia shall receive the same tax cut of 5%

I hereby open debate on this bill

Although I'm not a Senator, I would like to ask how much this bill would cost (a rough estimate is fine). Thanks.

Due to .2 it's impossible to tell. As for .1 I've been unable to find how much tax is paid by certain industries and can't tell you the answer to that either. In the long run, this should end up generating a net benefit to our finances (although probably in an indirect way).

---
As a general question to anyone who might be reading this, do corporations pay the federal income tax thing as well as the corporate income tax? Reason I ask, is because .1 needs a bit of amending.

I could support this if it was coupled with a reduction in some other tax.

The amendment is for .1:

The words "all federal taxes" are to be replaced by "corporate income tax and capital gains tax".

I think that should do it...

If it's your own bill and it has not been amended by anyone else, I believe that you can just change it without needing the Senate to agree to it.

Well, I always did that when I was PPT for myself and others.  If it's not procedure, procedure be damned. Tongue

I thought that was only if the bill was still in the legislation introduction thread.

Actually, I misread the bill. I thought it was a tariff.
But it's really some social engeneering taht should be voted down.

Not social engineering; it's cutting taxes for an important section of the economy that needs a boost.

So, it's giving special priviledges to a sector in order to save doomed companies from bankruptcy at the cost of economic efficiency?
If you are going to do that, put up a tariff, at least it will earn us some money.

Amended version:

Protection Bill (Textiles, Clothing, Footwear & Steel)

1. Companies, co-operatives or self-employed individuals in the textiles, clothing, footwear and iron & steel industries shall receive a 5% cut in all corporate income tax and capital gains tax that that company, co-operative or individual pays.

2. Companies in the retail sector that only stock textiles, textile products and clothing made in Atlasia shall receive the same tax cut of 5%

Shall I call a vote on it?

Though the ATJ does not support many tax cuts in light of budget deficits, we feel this bill is in the best interests of common Atlasian citizens and therefore support this bill.

Atlasians for Taxpayers "Justice"

I cannot support this.  I'm all for tax cuts, but only if we cut programs, too.  We need to get rid of the deficit, not make it bigger.

Taxes are cut. It's a tax cut.

How is it social engineering? It's just a bill to protect certain manufacturers and certain communities from foreign competition as a result of CAFTA.

The Senate refused to pass CAFTA, IIRC.

Its a special priviledge, adn is probably uncosntitutional according to current jurisprudence.
