the other 15 are probably mostly located in Utah, Idaho, Nebraska, Wyoming and Texas, as well as the Oklahoma panhandle, all three counties there voted for him with over 80%. There also was this very sparsely populated one in the southeast corner of Oregon that went over 80%, that probably would've been one as well.

Gore's best counties were very urban (or majority-minority).

Bush's best counties were very rural and in Texas or the interior west.

It would be interesting to see a list of the top Bush counties with at least 100,000 voters.

I'd be willing to take a look at a region or two (from the results on Dave's site) if someone else would take the rest and then we'd compile a list...

Can't think of many cities that went for Bush, apart from the obvious Colorado Springs, Tulsa, Jacksonville, Witchita, Salt Lake City etc.

I don't know about the one from MI, but the others are outer suburban counties, not urban ones. Hardly surprising, right...?

I'm not from Michigan, but I know it's right next to Kent county, which contains Grand Rapids, a pretty conservative city, although it voted for Gore due to minority populations. So it is sort of an suburban/exurban county of a rather conservative city, making it VERY conservative. Also I believe most people are of Dutch ancestry, meaning it could be very similar to Sioux county, Iowa, where most people belong to conservative Dutch Reformed churches and basically vote in bloc. Someone from Michigan could probably give better perspective though.

SLC is actually quite liberal and voted heavily for Gore (although the suburbs are a different story). Most of the Mormons do not live in SLC, they live mostly in the suburbs and outer Provo/Ogden areas.

Both Kent and Salt Lake counties voted heavily for Bush. The cities proper may be a different story though.
Thanks for the info on Ottawa.

I think Va. Beach went for Bush.

Lewis--

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. Yes, you are correct, BRTD, Ottawa is a semi-suburban county in a heavily conservative area, with a large Dutch population. Also lots of wealthy people there too. Grand Rapids is quite a conservative city overall, Gore barely won the city proper and the suburbs are very Republican. Lots of wealthy people, lots of churchgoers, and the Dutch in general tend to be conservative to begin with. Also metro Grand Rapids doesn't have that many racial minorities compared to most cities.

Houston? Maybe Dallas/San Antonio? Though while the counties containing those cities might have gone republican...I can't say about the cities for sure.

Knoxville and Chattanooga, TN would be up there (though the city of Knoxville went just barely for Gore)

Can't say for sure either, but Bexar County was pretty close (not real close, but, you know) and the part outside city limits is very White and very Republican, so I'd say San Antonio must've voted Gore. Dallas and Houston are not obvious either - the counties were much more Republican, but they include more suburbs than bexar, which also have a higher turnout (Hispanic turnout in Texas is abysmal). I don't know wether Bush or Gore won those cities, I wouldn't be surprised to learn either.

Does anyone know the top 5 or so counties for Gore?

I'm guessing San Francisco was one of them.

Doubtful. He got less than 80% there. He got about 87% each in the Bronx, in Washington DC, and in rural Macon County, AL.

Now, it would be impressive if you knew a Republican in Macon county Alabama.

Macon has given over 80% of it's votes to whoever the Dem candidate was since 1980!
In 2000 Gore won all the precincts (his best was Seasha #2, where he won 98% (!) of the vote. Bush's best was Notasulga City Hall #1, where he [Bush] won 46% of the vote).
