This is largely related to the origins of the recall movement in Progressivism.

There and subsequently, he endorsed the full range of Progressive constitutional reforms: the initiative, referendum, and recall, including the recall of judges and judicial decisions.
It's a historical irony that these "conservatives" are making use of Progressive reforms. And an inexplicable one,
