Bush doesn't have enough of the "tough-on-crime" approach to get him over the top in a few states [such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Illinois]

But he also alienates fewer Country Club Republicans and a better hand to help farmers [hence Oregon and Iowa]

Ultimately though, Dukakis's terrible performance still means Bush gets that landslide.

There's a good chance Dole would be the nominee, as this would alienate a lot of the Republican base. If Dole does get nominated, Dukakis (assuming the Democrats still nominate him) has a good chance at the general as one must not also forget Dole was also a lousy campaigner.
