Let's say that Douglas withdraws and the borders states lean toward Lincoln. Who wins?

Lincoln obviously wins. Even though over 60% voted for another candidate, Lincoln still would win the electoral college against a united opposition.

If you look at the 1860 electoral map, you'll see that each of the candidates basically ran separate campaigns that appealed to a very small sectional group. Douglas' votes were in the North, & Breckenridge & Bell split the vote in the South (which Lincoln was never gonna contest, let alone win anyway). Even if you combined ALL of the non-Lincoln votes together into Breckinridge, Lincoln STILL would've won, & he only would've lost CA & OR, which together had 7 electoral votes, allowing him to still win the Electoral College by 173-130. Of course, this means that he'd have won less than 40% of the popular vote against a candidate that would've won over 60%, which kinda blows your mind but it's mathematically true; Lincoln basically campaigned in only half of the country, & his vote totals showed that. It was the Electoral College that saved him in the end, & even a unified Democratic ticket probably wouldn't have been able to defeat him.
