A question: in what purple/swing areas of America does this immigration platform play well in? These are positions outside mainstream

As the article notes, even legal Hispanic immigrants do not support some stuff we saw yesterday night.

It certainly helps that Donald Trump’s immigration platform is also outside the mainstream according to most opinion polls. Why is it only Democrats who get to live in a bubble?

Did you see the 2018 exit polls? 48% either approved of Trump's immigration policies or thought they didn't go far enough. That's not "outside the mainstream".

This isn’t true. Even the border wall polls in the low to mid 40s now, not outside mainstream

The child separation is outside mainstream, however.

This is one of many underlying reasons why Donald Trump getting re-elected is still basically a coin flip despite all the metrics thus far.

No, but 50% of Americans do think he has gone too far on immigration, which is his signature issue.

His family separation policy is unpopular and outside of the mainstream.

His attempts to repeal DACA protections are unpopular and outside of the mainstream.

His emergency declaration for wall funding was unpopular and outside of the mainstream.

The vast majority of Americans prefer pathways to citizenship over mass deportations.

But I guess only Democrats live in a bubble on this issue.

It’s possible that both trump and the dems are outside the mainstream

Abolishing ICe is outside mainstream

Healthcare for illegals is outside mainstream

Letting in anyone who claims asylum is outside mainstream

Sanctuary cities are outside mainstream

Tearing down existing fencing is outside mainstream

Letting in anyone who has a child with them is outside mainstream

Yes, which is precisely the problem with Andrew Sullivan’s declaration that the Dems are committing political suicide because of this. If Democrats are at fault for holding positions outside of the mainstream when it comes immigration issues, they are in good company when it comes to their opposition.

Yeah I have it as 60% chance that Democrats win. Obviously if it was held tomorrow it would be 95% but the clown car should lower the chances for the Democrats substantially.

Some of us don’t want to abandon our principles for what appears to be politically convenient. Most people who are pro-life would be pro-life even if it polled at 20%. I believe immigrants must be treated humanely, and public opinion polling isn’t going to make me budge on this issue.

Thank you! This is where I'm at too. This issue really has become as simple as cruelty vs. fairness, with the Democrats on the fairness side, and there's nothing wrong with that. The right wing narrative on this issue is not the objective reality of it.

Perhaps the political mainstream is further right than the polls show...

It almost definitely is, but it still doesn't mean they're right or properly informed.

But muh Republicans are on the wrong side of history!

The democrats are continually fringing their way to a loss in November. People don't like Trump but the Dems aren't going to gain any votes doing this.

He's not wrong.

I think the healthcare for illegal immigrants idea will have the worst impact, however.

The Trump campaign is gonna spin the hell out of that.

Hey Pitt steel, forgot to say this earlier.....

but congrats on your candidate doing so well in the debate last night. I oppose her deeply on ideological grounds, but damn did she come in prepared and poised. Made Biden look foolish and defeated. That was plain said seeing him say his time was up LOL.

I know you have wanted her from the start, so congrats on what is looking like a game changing new race.

Plaster the photo of the guys who killed Kate Steinle and Mollie Tibbetts between the Dems talking about opening the border - that's a winning campaign ad, like it or not.

"The left" has been getting high on Cato Institute immigration papers for so long, they now believe there is no cost associated with becoming the ward of an unlimited number of poor people. They think becoming the ward of an unlimited number of poor people is actually profitable!

If you start from this insane premise, it follows that the only reason you could oppose millions of needy poor people into your country is hatred for the color of their skin.

Here we are again with the infinity people argument.

Oh sorry, 'unlimited'. The implied version of that non-existent infinity.

To be fair, during the debate, I didn't agree with most Democrats that undocumented people shouldn't be deported. The Dreamers should obviously be protected and granted a pathway to citizenship, but people who came in later and have a rejected asylum status should be subject of deportation. Democrats better acknowlege this or it plays into Donald Trump's hands, who uses immigrants to throw bones to his base.

A Democratic president should again work to implement the 2013 deal on immigration that solved the Dreamer issue and provided billions of dollars for real border security.
