The context of this strikes me more like another example of Trump's ongoing feud with the press, rather than telling the public in general that the contents of the discussion are none of our business. Of course, without being transmitted through the medium of the press, the news isn't going to reach the public (or, at least, not in a mass information sort of way), thereby having the same results.

Trump doesn't understand that he works for the American people, and thinks his position is one that is infallible.

If I were a journalist like Chuck Todd, and had the rare opportunity to interview Trump without being a brown-nose; I would ask the President if he genuinely thinks he is above the law, and what constraints he believes he actually has on his position. Because from what it appears, Trump might as well think of himself as a divine King, beholden to no one.
