1983-2001, I guess.

Both periods were pretty bad though.

Life was objectively better for most people in 1983-2001.

Which period would you go without taking into account technology.

2001-Present you have had : the worst terrorist attack on US soil happen, the worst recession since the 1930s, nation getting more and more polarized every year , 18 year war etc

Neither of these are distinct periods; they are multiple period mashed together to form a narrative.

I was going to say 1945-1963, but that era was still dominated by segregation and anti-civil rights atrocities.

1945-1963 was more honest about its misgivings, and the TV hadn't completely altered the landscape yet.

I don't understand voting for 45-63 unless one is a racist.

Segregation in part of the country was better than supply-side economics in all of the country.

And in the South. By the early 60s, about half of blacks did not live in the South.

For ~5% of the population, it was worse, yes. It's not like the racism went away after the CRA and VRA though. (whether in the South or elsewhere)

Things were worse then but moving in the right direction. Things between the recession that created the rust belt and 9/11 were great but weren't moving in the right direction though in a few instances they were.

I mean, the 50s and 60s gave us rapid advances in technology and living standards. The 80s and 90s saw the advent of the internet and very interesting discoveries were made. Still, things were pretty stagnant when you look beyond IT. Since then, living standards continue to stagnate, the wealthy hoard more wealth but provide fewer and fewer benefits to society for each new dollar they hoard, and people we charge with improving our lives continue to promise more and more and deliver less and less.

Makes me wonder sometimes.

Whenever a new fighter plane or space program project gets delayed or asks for another billion, or when a new drug to fight Alzheimer's fails phase III trials, do you think anyone on the ground gets fired?

Do you think there will ever be a time when the media says the economy is doing poorly but most people are happy with it?

I'm pretty sure that some people on Atlas would say this unironically.

So '83-'01?

Let's be honest though. America has never been better, and is only going to keep improving.

The former period was better for the US overall, but the latter period did have the best punk rock.

In seriousness, the rate of progress was faster in '45-'63 but from '83 to '01 the standard of living was higher.
