Giant swastika on Austrian castle finally gets removed after 85 years

The giant swastika has been "discovered" about 5 years ago after apparently "a lot of trees" were removed in front of it.

It has been there since 1934.

The owner of the castle refused to remove the swastika, because of the huge costs.

Now the state of Carinthia decided to pay for the ca. 200.000€ it will cost to remove the swastika.

There is a white swastika painted on the top part of the castle. There is also "Heil Hitler" written under it.

I agree, but you can be in favour of removal of the swastika even if you oppose the ban on Nazi symbols on free speech grounds - because you want the castle restored to its original condition before the Nazis painted the swastika.

They have, which is why the state is paying for the removal rather than seizing the property from the owner or throwing him in prison.
