The primary will be a cakewalk for Lee Zeldin.

Not for Hochul.

Among prominent New York Democrats, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is no longer alone in having once been a Blue Dog:

Kathy Hochul's past conservative positions raise eyebrows: report

If New York Democrats are well aware of her past, and still vote to give her the gubernatorial nomination in the 2022 primary, what will this say about the New York Democratic Party?

She should pick a sane progressive like Williams, if he is sane.

What about Tom DiNapoli, he is from Downstate, from Long Island, the crucial suburban vote is there's for Hochul if she is going to tie Zeldin to Trump....

I'd be really, really surprised if Williams is chosen. I'm not sure what to make of him, whether he's a Nina Turner leftist or more like a non-toxic progressive like Fetterman or Biaggi. If latter is the case and Hochul can get along with him and assign him with some duties he likes to undertake, it could be a good move and essentially shut down a left-wing primary challenge (I would assume both de facto run as a ticket then and endorse each other). Ideally both would run unopposed then. Hochul definitely has moved to the left in recent years, so their differences (maybe) could be worked out. Both would also demonstrate that they more care about the good of the state than past rivaleries, just like Biden-Harris.

I don't think Williams is toxic - seems much more like Biaggi to me, than Nina Turner (yuck).

Hochul and Gillibrand represented conservative areas, they had to be Blue Dogs....

I think she also hinted it will be someone from Downstate by saying she likes diversity in the administration. I hope she names a sane progressive who can help in 2022.

Any shot it's Jumaane Williams? He meets the already stated criteria of "someone people are familiar with" and also provides a lot of balance/diversity (geographic, ideological, gender, racial). This move would also probably help her fend off a primary challenge from the left in '22 by demonstrating to progressives that they have a seat at the table in her administration.

He's quite literally the only person whom I can think of who'd meet all of the presumed pre-requisites based on her statement: a NYC politician who's a racial &/or ethnic minority & whom most people are already pretty familiar with.

Unfortunately, Andrew Yang also meets all the criteria. Balances geography, gender, ethnicity, and who hasn't heard of the guy. He also seems to have a knack at failing towards success. But I hope he isn't what she has in mind.

Oh nooooooooo. It's hard to imagine her picking him, but the possibility does scare me.

Thinking back, I guess Rubén Díaz Jr. is also an obvious yet overlooked possibility, given that he's on the outs in the Bronx.

Even if true, the general election certainly won't be for Zeldin and his stupid, punchable face. He has no chance against anyone not named Andrew Cuomo.

Watch Hochul’s LG turn around and try and primary her

You'd have to think that part of the agreement to serve with her would include a promise not to do that.

People need to stop with this sh**t. Her past is irrelevant. Maybe focus on the positions she's held last 5 years versus 15 years ago?

Jumaane Williams makes calculated sense (he balances the ticket on Upstate/Downstate, racial, gender and ideological lines). He seems to be one of the great progressive hopes in the state, so Hochul could make 2022 a lot easier on herself if she gets him to join her ticket now.

He’s not 100% clean. His 2018 campaign was criticised after it had to fire several high-profile staffers for issues very similar to Cuomo’s behaviour. He’s also been vocal about personal issues with both abortion and same sex marriage, which although not dealbreakers, could lead to intra-party strife in a high-profile primary dominated by a “I’m more progressive than thou” mentality.

I kinda wonder whether a term or two as LG might remove those issues for Williams. 4-8 years of tie-breaking, fundraising and progressive speech-making would basically make it all insignificant in comparison to his record. He’s made a decent career as PA, but there might be as much for him to gain as Hochul if she offers it to him.

That would have to be fast.

Her best choice for Lieutenant Governor would probably be a corruption free relatively progressive (but not necessarily AOC levels) BIPOC male member of the state senate or state assembly from New York City. Which would not be someone most people have heard of. But it would help for balance and governing.

So we've got the frontrunner in next year's race.

We may also get some comic relief:

Kathy Hochul wins the primary. She then wins the general elections with around 51-52% of the vote.

Awful take. She will easily win the general. No Democrat would lose the general--not even Cuomo.

Al Sharpton "has been asked" about running against Hochul.

YEEEES! Strongly endorsed! Let's go Queen!

It's good that she immediately made clear to have no intention of being only a placeholder. In the coming months she needs to demonstrate that she can govern effectively and change the political atmosphere in Albany in stark contrast to Cuomo's style. And given her experience and the relationships she has built over most recent years, I'm very confident she'll do exactly that.

DeBlasio would be a horrible candidate and a challenge from him would flop very badly as he's not even popular in New York City. I'm still hopefully Hochul can run unopposed or with just minor opposition in the primary. She'll definitely get some high-profile endorsements from Gillibrand, Schumer and the Clintons, which should carry a lot of weight. Then so can go on and clobber Zeldin or whatever clown the Republicans nominate.
