Ever since the establishment of the Republican Party, the counties of California that have been historically the most supportive of it were Alpine and Mono, usually by margins of over 20 or 30 percentage points. However, those margins were significantly reduced in the late 1990's and early 2000's to the low teens and high single digits, with some Democratic wins, and by the mid-2000's had become Democratic-leaning counties at the federal level. In 2008, Alpine and Mono were the only two non-coastal counties in the state (excluding Yolo county) to vote against amending the state constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage. In 2016 and 2018, Hillary Clinton and Gavin Newsom won Mono county by between 10 and 15 points, and won over 60% of the vote in Alpine County. This is in spite of those counties being very rural, white, and sparsely populated, which is especially puzzling once you consider that almost all other rural, white-majority counties in both interior California and across the country have been consistently trending Republican over the past twenty years.

Ski resorts. Similar to Blaine County, Idaho and Summit County, Utah.

Alpine and Mono are at the doorstep to the Sierra - they've attracted a number of retirees and "alternative" folk. Mono's largest population center is Mammoth Lakes (huge ski community) and Alpine is small (just over 1K residents) and remote enough that a small influx of retirees or lifestylers can have a big effect on the county's voting patterns.

Both are beautiful by the way. That drive down 395 from Reno to Lone Pine is my favorite drive in existence. The drive up from Topaz Lake to Markleeville is also very beautiful. I would love to retire there.

I think it because natural geographical features that are used for various recreational purposes are at risk of destruction from global warming.
