How much do guillotines and gallows cost?

Asking for a nation of 300 million that has seen real wages and purchasing power stagnate for half a century while productivity and wealth disparity steadily increase.

Cotton's not wrong here.

That said, Cotton's the scariest Senator in Washington, DC, bar none.  I'd be less scared with Steve King in the White House, simply because Cotton is (A) more intelligent, and (B) a bigger warmonger.  Steve King's a jerk, but he's also not bright enough to get much done, whereas Cotton is extremely intelligent in a frightening sort of way.

It is so funny how all these free trade/small government/balanced budget principled(R) GOPers have fallen in line with the orange clown's vodoo economics. And how they have turned a blind eye on his personal dishonesty. History will judge them not mildly.

Yeah, I'm sure you can find some pretty scary Tom Cotton comments, but this isn't one of them.

Tom Cotton is not intelligent. I'd say he's one of the less intelligent Senators.

What is he trying to say to the viewing public?
That if we don't do tariffs against China (supposedly cheaper), that the alternative is to send US "soldiers" to China (war) which is more expensive? (Beyond the fact that there would be a nuclear missile exchange of destruction between the two nations.)
Is that a threat from him to China?

It's just a stupid comment, anyway you look at it.

Tom Cotton is not intelligent. I'd say he's one of the less intelligent Senators.

His bio would say differently given that he was a hick child (non-legacy) who went to Harvard undergrad and Law and graduated early with honors. His conniving mastery of language in most interviews would confirm that he is indeed a heavyweight.

Approximately 1/3 of the Senate can boast something resembling a comparable educational resume. School is far from everything but it does tell more than a little bit. You can be sure that the other 2/3 does not contain more than a handful of underprivileged intellectuals forced to scrap it out in life.

Anyway, the comparison was to Steve King who is clearly more than a little slow. Crazy to watch his thought process play out in public. He's playing Chutes and Ladders when the media is playing chess.

He's right. Tariffs or war are the only two foreign policy options.

Except practically all of soldiers currently in the military made a voluntary decision to take part in the country's war machine, whereas few if any people, many of which can barely afford to live to start with, volunteered to have their already high cost of living raised further.

Senator Tom Cotton is exactly what one gets when the ethos of the economic elites is that no human suffering can ever be in excess so long as elites take everything. He seems like the sort who wants a war for profit as an elected official -- but remember that behind such a leader is the economic warmongers who see profit in war and not human suffering.

Among such an elite a million deaths are fine so long as such deliver ten billion dollars in profits.

Trade wars destabilize shaky democracies and bring about thug regimes... and fortify the evil of  existing thug regimes.

Gotta agree with you, Fuzzy. Cotton is dangerous. He’s one of three people (Ted Cruz and Kris Kobach are the others), who would make me vote for Trump over the specified opponent.

Cotton, like you say, is not a moron in the way Trump is. He’s Ivy League educated, he’s a veteran, so large portions of the base love him for that, and he has such radical views (especially on crime and foreign policy) that he could theoretically put to power (Trump, for all of the stupid and dangerous things he thinks, has not been effective largely because he’s a moron). Tom Cotton wanted to throw entire families in prison if a member violated sanctions on Iran, including great-grandchildren. That is straight up something that North Korea does.

Quote
Cotton also seeks to punish any family member of those people, “to include a spouse and any relative to the third degree,” including, “parents, children, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, grandparents, great grandparents, grandkids, great grandkids,” Cotton said.

“There would be no investigation,” Cotton said during Wednesday’s markup hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “If the prime malefactor of the family is identified as on the list for sanctions, then everyone within their family would automatically come within the sanctions regime as well. It’d be very hard to demonstrate and investigate to conclusive proof.”

Preach it Tom. I would love to see you be our President from 2025-2033. We'll need to compensate for that mistake from Arkansas we suffered through in the 1990s. Thankfully we have Trump to compensate for all of New York's mistakes, which says a lot both about NY and about Trump.

Cotton is dangerous as hell, but In fairness to the devil I don't think that's an accurate summation of his views. He's not saying that individuals to the third degree would be placed in prison, but rather that individuals to the third degree of separation out from people Target for sanctions would also be placed on the sanctions list. One can dispute whether or not that degree of separation is legit, but I can see a point to that because otherwise those individuals placed on sanctions lists by the US would simply transfer assets or do business dealings through close relatives. And under Persian culture, extended families are very close.
