Nobody is mandating that you put your pronouns in your bio,

No but they are trying to mandate it in real life.

Who is doing that? I've seldom heard anyone make an issue of preferred pronouns in real life.

I wouldn’t mind if he did it, but I don’t understand how it suddenly makes him a transphobe or something if he isn’t.

Nobody is saying Sanders is a transphobe.

We're saying BRTD and John Dule are transphobes.

As I've said before, we really need a "High Hanging Fruit Tree" or something for silly posts like this. BRTD is undoubtedly in the bottom 10% of Americans if ranked by how much transphobia they have.

This isn't an excuse. He doesn't respect non-binary people

Funny thing is I'm probably the only person on the forum who's ever voted for a "non-binary" person:
https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=276831.0
And from a story about that race:
Quote
Devin Hogan, a small business consultant and Lyndale neighborhood resident, won the DFL nomination with 63 percent of delegate support. Hogan, who identifies as non-binary genderqueer, ran on a “neoliberal-free Park Board” sentiment and said, as commissioner, he would support reviewing the board’s lurking and spitting ordinances.

Some liberal arts colleges and progressive activist groups meetings.

This scares me because as I said if forced to do this it'd be a traumatic experience for me so I don't want it happening at my local DFL meetings.

Since many think this is mandatory to be a leftist, lol.

No obviously. I don't know of a single politician that does this thank God.
Less than two years later and 8 senators and over a dozen members of the house do social media pronouns. It’s weird how quick the tide has shifted on this issue.

Bernie hasn’t though

This is still ~5% of U.S. Congress. It hasn't shifted as of yet.

My man! (everyone already knows he's one too!)

This guy doesn't rely on pointless virtue signalling to get supporters, unlike so many other politicians.

No but some super square Republican like Jeb Bush or something should just for the LOL's.

I think what most people object to is not when actual transpeople do this but when people whose gender is completely non ambiguous do it just to get backslaps. It's completely fine to roll your eyes at attention seeking crap like that and it actually comes off as condescending to transpeople as some have actually said.

Some people are saying this is to "normalize" it but no matter how many people do it it still won't be "normal". 99% of people's "pronouns" are apparent just from looking at them for two seconds. That's fine, no one's under any obligation to be "normal". But there's no reason for a super femme looking girl to tell people "oh yeah, I go by she/her" when that's completely obvious without her telling anyone.

It's fundamentally a virtue signaling thing, like putting a rainbow filter over your Facebook profile pic. Which is fundamentally harmless and not worth getting riled up over, I'll agree with that. My biggest problem is that it's starting to tie in to a very toxic Internet subculture. Like look at the Sarah Paulson Twitter incident a couple weeks ago. They are ironically enough, basically just another side of the same coin as the alt-right and the Gamergate type folks, they engage in the same tactics, mass harassment, bullying, doxxing, etc. and have a zero tolerance policy toward anyone who ever crosses them, look at Lindsay Ellis for a prime example of this.

But in all fairness, politicians who do this aren't really part of this awful subculture, and probably aren't thinking much beyond that it's easy and simple virtue signaling, so they shouldn't be attacked for it.

My opinion on this hasn't changed since I responded in 2019: it's entirely up to him.

No one should be pressured to include pronouns, or not include pronouns. It is an easy way to signal that you support trans rights, but if you're uncomfortable listing pronouns, there are other ways to do that.

I don’t really see the point in putting pronouns in your twitter bio for most people- main reason to do so is if you think people might refer to you a way you don’t like, to preemptively prevent that, but this is hardly a risk for Bernie.

However if he wants to, sure, he can.

Yes, all politicians should do this so I never actually vote for a they/them.

And before the meltdown, no I'm not anti-trans or anti-non-binary. If people want to use zhe/zhim or whatever, that's 100% cool with me. But we simply cannot rewrite the English language and make plural words singular.
Can we all just agree that anyone who uses the argument "'they/them' is plural and therefore incorrect" is actually just a transphobe or nbphobe? It's impossible to have gone your entire life and never said the word "they" in a singular context.

At my little brothers school, children are forced list pronouns next to their name on assignments. Ridiculous.

You would think this would be common sense, but apparently not, from both Left and Right wingers.

Also, I was shocked to see this thread was from May of 2019. Were pronouns really even worth talking about back then?

Yeah, that's really screwed up. Why don't they just ask the kids to list their pronouns once in the "get to know you" worksheet that's usually a part of the first day? Is this a thing outside of Oregon?

That’s the sort of needless performativity to try to score woke points that actually doesn’t achieve anything at all. A lot of trans people aren’t comfortable with the whole pronoun-sharing stuff, as it can force people to either come out when they’re not ready to or have to write down/say they’re something they don’t want to be.

And yet this pronoun circle stuff still happens. Needs to die off asap.
