The 2000 presidential election in Vermont was kind of a "last hurrah" for the old Yankee Republicans, being the only presidential election in the last 20 years where the GOP cracked 40% there. Much like how generational turnover in the South further pushed it to the Republicans, generational turnover in Vermont pushed it more to the Democrats. I could see a similar trend occurring in the future but in reverse, where the generation of liberal "flatlanders" passing away pushes Vermont back towards the GOP.
