Bamboo shoots is a nice kind of food in China. Do people in English-speaking countries also eat them?

I've never seen them or even heard of them.  The cheapest I can get them on Amazon is $10 for a tiny 8oz can of them, that's more expensive than beef jerky.  Which is odd considering the internet tells me they are easy to grow.  High in potassium and fiber, but poisonous if not prepared properly.

edit-apparently it is available at the local Chinese food place we frequent.  Perhaps I will get a Happy Family next time we go.  (I normally get Shrimp Fried Rice 'cause I'm a boring cracker, though I do ask for them to make it "spicey" which they do...randomly hot, so the first bites are always kind of fun)

They serve it at my local Chinese fast-food place. Delish!

I've had them in SF's Chinatown a few times. Good stuff.

When I was a kid my mom had a Chinese-influenced recipe she used them in.  I forget what the dish was called.

That's because of the shipping cost built into the price. A pack of 12 8oz cans is only $19, which is not bad for home delivery of a specialty food.

I’ve had them since I was a kid.  I thought they were part of lots of different dishes.  The dish I’ve had with the most is shredded pork with garlic sauce.  I’m actually not a huge fan.

My favorite chinese vegetable dishes are eggplant in garlic sauce, bok choy, and this dish of napa cabbage, goji berries, and chestnuts in a delicious broth.  The kinda food sick people should eat.

Voo, why is Chinese food so often cooked with so much oil and grease, at least here in the United States?

They're alright, but water chestnuts are where it's at.
