I've served in the Atlas War On Trolls. I like to think of it as my own personal Vietnam.

I've served in the Atlas War On Trolls. I like to think of it as my own personal Vietnam.

At least Vietnam was winnable.

My brother was on the USS Saipan for the Grenada invasion and got to see a bunch of officers fly in, stay on board his baby flattop for 30 minutes, and then fly out so they could qualify for the campaign ribbon. He was also on the USS Abraham Lincoln defending the California coast during the Gulf War. My dad served in the Army in WWII and the Air Force during Korea, but never got overseas. I had a great uncle who who was in the Army in WWI but was shot down by mumps in training camp and thus never got to have any kids. (Another reason why I think anti-vaxxers don't know what they speak of.) Both my grandfathers were too old for WW I and too young for the Spanish-American War.

My grandpa was in the navy in WWII (Pacific theater) and I had two uncles who were in the navy during Vietnam, but I don't know if either of them were ever actually deployed there.

My maternal grandpa served in World War II, stationed in the front against Japan. He is about the only relative I know of that has ever served though. My paternal grandpa, meanwhile, from Sicily, actually came to the USA to avoid Italy's draft.

My dad and uncles were drafted in the army as it was mandatory at the time, but didn't fight any wars. The draft was abolished in 2001, so I will be one of the first men in my family not to be in the army.

Going back further, one of my grandparents fought in the Spanish Civil War at the end of it when he was drafted (Francoist side). My other grandparent was a kid when the Civil War happened so he didn't fight. I think he was involved in some sort of skirmish in Spanish Africa while he was drafted in the army, but not a proper war.

No immediate family, but my mom and dad had uncles and grandparents who did.

EDIT: On a slightly related note, my grandpa unfortunately actually just passed away and decided to leave me two very cool things I had always been fascinated with.  His uncle fought in World War I (for the United States) and brought back with him a German helmet.  So, my grandpa (and soon I) have both an American and German war helmet from WWI.

My grandfather was drafted into the Hitler army as a 17-year old in 1944 and was sent to the French/Italian fronts.

It was hell.

My other grandfather stayed at the farm during the war, but I’m not sure about the details, because he already died in the mid-80s before I was born.

Did he actually end up trying to fight and thereby helping to prolong the existence of the Nazi Regime, or did he do the right thing and desert to the other side of the front lines immediately?

Considering he was probably a terrified 17-year old, he probably did what he was told, completely unaware of the worst war crimes the Nazis were committing and bought into the lies they told their low ranking soldiers and - understandably - believed them.

^ This.

The Nazis were bad people, but they were also really good at brainwashing. Besides, I doubt he would've known about the awful and unfair treatment of the oppressed peoples in Germany, and other awful things that Nazi Germany did back when they were in power.

My maternal grandfather served in World War 2 in the US army. It was why my mom's side of the family defected to Canada when the Vietnam draft happened.

This and from what I know he had a war trauma as a result, but still was a good dad for my mom and 2 uncles later on.

My father was my closest relative to serve during wartime conflict. He was in Europe from late 1944 to the end of WWII. He also served in Korea during the first two years of that conflict.

My dad, not as a combatant, but as a UN peacekeeper in Yugoslavia in the late 90's. He initially joined the Argentine Air Force in the early-mid 80's so if he was a little bit older he would have gone to the Malvinas war.

Dad - Vietnam war era veteran (no combat afaik)
Uncle on dad’s side - same as dad
Paternal granddad - Korean War era veteran (no combat afaik)
Maternal granddad - Korean War combat veteran
Paternal grandma’s dad - WWII navy combat veteran
Maternal grandma’s dad - WWII navy veteran as well (combat I think?)
Maternal granddad’s maternal grandma’s brother - WWI veteran (died during the war)
Direct paternal line great great great grandpa - Union civil war combat veteran
Paternal grandfather’s paternal grandmother’s dad + granddad - Union civil war combat vets (grandad died but his son survived).

That’s as far as I’m aware.
