Many Atlas Democrats won't like it.

Cuomo 2022? Governor hints at running for a fourth term

ALBANY -- When Gov. Andrew Cuomo held a high-priced campaign fundraiser in Manhattan in mid-March, it was unclear why.

Was it a quiet event for a potential presidential run or some other race the third-term governor might be considering?

On Friday, Cuomo hinted at the reason: He simply might run for a fourth term.

The campaign cash "was raised by state limits, so it wouldn’t be applicable to run for a federal race," Cuomo said Friday on The Capitol Pressroom, a public radio show.

Asked if that meant he will run for a fourth term, Cuomo initially laughed and then said, "Well, it’s state money raised for a re-election. So yes."

So a fourth term?

"Well, I did a fundraiser for a political committee that would fund my re-election effort," he responded again.

Yeah, go Andy! I'd strongly support him, even though I hope for Kathy Hochul to succeed him as first female governor of New York.

I wonder who from the (probably far) left primaries him that time just to get crushed yet again.

He should run for President, and someone like Bloomberg should run for governor

He’s better than Cynthia Nixon or deBlasio, but that’s a low bar

I agree he should run for president. Bloomberg is too old, even though I like him; Kathy Hochul would make a fine governor. She would succeed him anyway if he successfully ran for president (maybe he eyes 2024 because he thinks Trump will win again).

Sounds like he's probably running for a 4th term & do something that NY St voters denied the late Daddy Cuomo.... winning a 4th term in 2022 & IF he does pull the trigger & completes it, it'll make him the first NY St Governor to serve 16 years.

Remember, the late Nelson Rockefeller (R) was the last NY St Governor elected to 4 terms.

Since then:
Nelson Rockefeller (R): 49th Governor from January 1st, 1973 to December 18th, 1973: resigned & later became VP under POTUS Gerald Ford in 1974.

Malcolm Wilson (R): 50th Governor from December 18th, 1973 to December 31st, 1974: defeated for election bid for full 4-year term in 1974.

Hugh Carey (D): 51st Governor from January 1st, 1975 to December 31st, 1982: didn't seek reelection to 3rd term in 1982.

Mario Cuomo (D): 52nd Governor from January 1st, 1983 to December 31st, 1994: defeated for reelection bid in 1994.

George Pataki (R); 53rd Governor from January 1st, 1995 to December 31st, 2006: didn't seek reelection in 2006.

Eliot Spitzer (D): 54th Governor from January 1st, 2007 to March 17th, 2008: resigned in disgrace due to prostitution scandal.

David Paterson (D): 55th Governor from March 17th, 2008 to December 31st, 2010: first African American Governor in NY St history; didn't seek election bid for full 4-year term in 2010.

Andrew Cuomo (D): 56th Governor since January 1st, 2011.

While id strongly prefer Kathy Hochul to succeed him as Governor if he runs for a 4th term I can't see how he doesnt win again even if a Democrat wins in 2020

I would hope he faces a stronger primary challenger than Cynthia Nixon as the GOP really doesnt have anyone won can win statewide at this point.

Unless a Republican can eat into margins in Westchester, and win Suffolk and Nassau alone with the other urban counties of New York I dont see how he doesnt win

This shouldn’t be surprising. He managed his father’s campaign for a fourth term in 1994, and, well...

New York was also a different state in 1994. It wasn't as solid blue as it is now.

I know, I’m merely speaking to Cuomo’s motivations. Anyone who thought he wasn’t running for a fourth term is deluding themselves.

Im not shocked at all though he will likely face a stronger primary challenger in 2022 as there are many Democrats who want to be governor including Hochul who has made it no secret she wants to be Governor but she's not going to challenge him in a primary.

Cuomo would likely be elected to a 4th term.  His father would have been had 1994 not been such a Republican year, and New York has grown far more Democratic than it was in 1994.

Cuomo was supposed to use this as a stepping stone for prez, but Cuomo is too conservative to be prez due to him compromising with Senate GOP over reappointment.

Its time, and has been time for change. California should of elected a more progressive Gov(Garcetti or Vilaragosa), too and the state elected Jerry Brown II, Newsom

DeBlasio would lose by at least ten points, if not more. Unless Cuomo gets a major scandal or me too etc., which quite frankly I don't see.

I have no problems with Cuomo, I like him actually, but I want him to retire just for the fun of the primary.

You know he's NOT going to buckle under pressure to satisfy people like you. The way I see it, it appears Cuomo is likely winning reelection to a 4th term in 2022.

I know, that is exactly why I do NOT want him to run, so we can have a competitive primary.

Primaries could get ugly & lead to tension & chaos as what happened to the TX Dems in 1978 when then-State AG John Hill (D) defeated then-TX Governor Dolph Briscoe (D) on May 6th, 1978's Dem Primary.... the Briscoe supporters including some of the Briscoe family members bolted to back Clements (R), who won the November GE.
