Quote
Trump often likes to use hyperbole to describe the places he visits, and in this case it led him to make a statement in the Great Lakes State that left some people scratching their heads.

"I support the Great Lakes. Always have," Trump said during his speech. "They're beautiful. They're big. Very deep. Record deepness.”

While the Great Lakes are big and many would describe them as beautiful, they are not among the deepest lakes in the United States, let alone the world.

Quote
"The last two decades have been kind of exceptional," said Carl Watras, a climate scientist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Water levels have been declining since 1998, Watras told Live Science. "Our lakes have never been lower than they are."

The research was published Jan. 21 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

When do the Republicans continue to support a demented old man who cannot do the job?

Oh, right, because while he may be a deranged fool, he publicly champions what Republicans love: bigotry, corruption, and white supremacy.

Or in other words:

The Great Lakes are as deep as his mind is shallow.

Trump's mocking tone in his completely inability to pander is his most endearing quality.

Donald Trump has never been more than an intellectual mediocrity. Were he from a middle-class background, he would have probably dropped out of college while on academic probation and gotten a job selling used cars at a tote-the-note lot. He might have lived fairly well, but he would not get to express his baseness as flamboyantly as he does. Or he might have gone into the pornography racket, which would well fit his misogyny.

He is about as pure Homo oeconomicus as one can be without being a gangster.

Here is a thread on a history forum on dictators (with a short digression to some drug kingpins similarly amoral and prone to similar tackiness) and their taste. It's not simply power; I contrast the official residence of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom who at times can do everything but rob the people and murder 'inconvenient' people such as dissidents and rivals.

That is a study related mostly to lakes in Wisconsin, not the Great Lakes.

Either way, it is from 2014 and things have really turned around.  Lakes Superior and Erie will challenge record high water levels this summer.  Superior has been at records for the time of year so far in 2019.  There were periods of low water in the 1920s, 1950s/60s and 1998-2013.

The levels have continued to stay very high after the end of that graph.  The 2018 July level was 602.61’.

So when Trump said what he said, this is what he was referring to.

I thought he meant record deepness as in deeper than other lakes. Not deeper than in the past.

I think it's pretty clear he didn't (and they aren't - their high volume comes from huge surface are plus some depth, not record depth).

But Snowguy's correction above is right (as is Trump's malapropism in this case) after a couple years of high snow and rain, water levels are at record highs after the recent lows I linked above and mistakenly thought had continued.

If so, he's wrong.  Maximum depth of Great Lakes:

Superior: 1333 feet
Michigan: 923 feet
Ontario: 802 feet
Huron: 750 feet
Erie: 210 feet

Deepest lake in the U.S.: Crater Lake, 1949 feet

Deepest lake in North America: Great Slave Lake, 2015 feet

Deepest lake in the world: Lake Baikal, 3893 feet

“We’re going to have the biggest, most beautiful lakes and make the Loch Ness Monster pay for it!  No one knows lakes better than Trump.  I am, like, a lake expert folks, believe me.  Obama’s lakes have DRIED up bigly.  Very bad!”

Has anybody noticed that Trump always makes baffling comments (even relative to his usual speech) about water in particular - tremendous wetness from the standpoint of water, big island water etc.
