First off, it's sailors not soldiers. Secondly, the carrier whose photo you probably saw to ask this question is most likely the USS Enterprise (CVN 65). That ship was known as the "Big E" and it was the first nuclear-powered carrier.

The first time they did this was in 1964 in this photo:


All three ships above are nuclear powered. Task Force One as it was called had just completed a round the world trip without having to stop to refuel. The USN long ago stopped having nuclear powered escorts as they were too expensive and didn't add much to their mission capability, so the various anniversary photos that have done since then show just the Big E. With carriers, it still makes sense as it let's them carry much more aviation fuel, and they have a long lifespan, tho it still increases cost. The Big E was in service for over 50 years.
