So Trudeau is banning these weapons why exactly? They weren't the type of gun used in the shooting.

Because letting people own assault weapons has no benefits and substantial drawbacks?

Can you point to these said substantial drawbacks as a means of policy?

International Indian students using food banks despite the fact they are required to be self sufficient and not leech of welfare/support systems.

https://nationalpost.com/opinion/jamie-sarkonak-house-arrest-for-impregnating-daughter-a-result-of-race-based-sentencing

So Canada is now doing race based sentencing.

Quote
While the Crown established, using past cases, that a jail sentence of four to six years was normal for this kind of crime, the appeal court dismissed this as merely a guideline. The court also noted that the offenders, in previous cases, were not African Nova Scotians. When deciding whether offenders of such heritage should serve house arrest or jail, the court wrote that “a more nuanced approach” was required. In short, a racial discount was to be applied.

I wonder if there is any chance Trudeau uses this to overall smartly restrict Indian immigration to more manageable levels while having political cover. Seems like the smartest play and the right for Canada, and US citizens.

Apologies for the photo but the text can't be copy pasted.
Can anyone tell me what the 1st Ukrainian Division is? Searching it on google gives me a Waffen SS unit called the 1st Galician. Did the Canadian parliament just salute a Waffen SS collaborator?

It's definitely being said in various online spaces that that's the case, yeah, which is disturbing and completely unacceptable if true. I haven't been able to find reliable sources spelling it out but it's a definite, and disquieting, possibility.

I do wonder if the Indian media picks up on this. The line would be that Canada honors radicals from around the globe such as Khalistanis and Ukrainian Nazis. Pretty easy propaganda to use .(OTOH India likes Bose a lot )

"Accept full responsibility"? Well how about this for a thought experiment, if a conservative member of parliament was caught honoring a domestic Nazi would Mr. Rota consider a token apology enough?

The Cons were honoring him as well. The description of fighting against the Russians in WW2 should have been enough for anyone to take a pause.  Zelensky could be forgiven by cultural/translation stuff but everyone else is guilty .

Also I can maybe buy most of Parliament being dumb but I can't buy Freeland's ignorance. Her grandfather was a fellow Nazi collaborator and she spent her college years in Ukraine studying WW2 history . She certainly was paying attention to this as well .

The Harper Conservatives made big inroads among Orthodox Jews, who previously had a low voter turnout. An interesting pattern in the GTA is that the Jewish community was clustered along Bathurst Street, and the more this community became upwardly mobile, the more it migrated northwards along Bathurst Street. These turned a few seats in North York and the York Region into play. The Jewish community in Montreal (anecdotally) became smaller but more Orthodox with the rise of Quebec nationalism. You can spot where they are clustered based on poll-by-poll maps, but they are too small to affect any seats.

Most non-Orthodox Jewish Canadians behave as one would expect: middle to upper middle class, with a somewhat socially liberal bent. They would be "naturally" Liberal-leaning voters, but could turn Conservative if the conditions are there.

But, anyway, I think the mood has shifted enough that Trudeau can be compared to the famous lettuce.

If Rota resigns what are the odds it flips in a by election? Seems like a fairly swingy liberal leaning seat.

Poland is also drumming up election baiting and wants to extradite Hunka. He probably deserves it but unlike a concentration  camp guard there isn't enough proof yet IMO.

I genuinely do not believe Trudeau or any other member of Cabinet was at fault for this, unless there's any evidence to the contrary it feels like an extremely cut-and-dry situation of Rota and/or Rota's staff being extremely incompetent, inviting a constituent without doing any due diligence.

You don't think Freeland emerges worse out of this?

The media has mostly shoved her backstory into a "Russian misinformation" hole from what I have seen. There was 1 or 2 stories I saw that came out but couldn't find many others

Trudeau heckled at restaurant .

After Trudeau and his security team drove off, Addison says officers attempted to "disperse the crowd." A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly punching a female police officer and attempting to "gouge" her eyes. A Taser was used during that arrest, along with what Addison described as "other physical control tactics."

An estimated 300,000 to 600,000 people are living in the country without valid documents, many of whom risk deportation because they lack formal status, The Global and Mail quoted Miller as saying.

The new program would also include people who entered the country legally, as temporary workers or international students, and then remained here after their visas expired, the report said.

Finally Canada does something about international "students" and puts a cap on them.

Starting on Sept. 1, Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced Monday, the federal government will stop issuing postgraduate work permits to international students who graduate from programs provided under so-called Public College-Private Partnerships.

Correct, it does seem like the liberals have finally noticed and limited the worst of the student visas to those fully fake colleges.

Trudeau says he thinks about leaving 'crazy job'

That's a very frank thing to say. A stupid thing to say if he wants another term. But I think Trudeau's at least considering a walk in the snow.

But I have to say, he's been a bit more frank recently in general. His impassioned defence of the carbon tax, while probably bad politics given the mood of the nation, I think he comes off much better in those off the cuff moments compared to his standard focus-grouped word salad non-answers. I don't think he's winning back any LPC-CPC defectors with that, but I can definitely see how a stance like that would at least help unite progressive voters around the LPC. And aside from partisan/ideological stuff, he does come across as a more assertive and confident leader than he has for months if not years, and that's half the job of a Prime Minister. But it might also be that his frankness is him thinking more about his long-term legacy rather than the next election, and it sounds like he doesn't really want to contest it in the first place.

A bit eye-rolly how he keeps insisting on calling it a "price" though. It's a tax, I get the political calculation there but literally nobody calls it a "price on carbon" or thinks of it as a "price". You tried to brand it that way, it didn't work. It's just corny at this point.

I could atleast understand his defense of the carbon tax but the simple fact is he helped out some provinces(Atlantic) while the Western provinces remain screwed over.

Seems the most infamous of the community colleges with 30k international students has lost most of them for next year.

Seems like Trudeau actually is backtracking. There actually could be a scenario where this entire international surge was more incompetence rather than malice.

Seems like Trudeau actually is backtracking. There actually could be a scenario where this entire international surge was more incompetence rather than malice.

“To give an example, in 2017, two per cent of Canada’s population was made up of temporary immigrants. Now we’re at 7.5 per cent of our population comprised of temporary immigrants. That’s something we need to get back under control.”

I can't believe the federal government is that incompetent.
Maybe they listened to businesses having difficulties to find employees due to manpower shortage rather than problems associated with such an influx of people.

No I agree most of what happened was intended but I think the international situation exploded due to more of a loophole like situation.
