Have you ever had to fire somebody?

Just did this afternoon. Personal friend before he became an employee. Also is my law partner's best friend. It wasn't for one particular thing or incident, but just ongoing problems that we've given months of opportunity to rectify, but had just gotten worse.

I feel cruddy, partner feels like complete s***. But we made the right call. Just looking for other people's experiences, even though I know mine today is a highly unusual one.

Yes, it sucks, even if you don't know/like them. Fortunately, I can count the number of times I've had to do this on one hand, and never with a personal friend.

On the other hand, I also frequently encourage companies to realize post-deal "synergies" (i.e. laying people off), but I never feel bad about it. Business is business, and deadwood needs to go.

I don't have the authority to unilaterally fire someone, but God knows I've had to generate the paper trail.  If you're in a decent sized organization it happens sooner or later.

I don't have the authority to do that. But often in projects for class I am the lead dude and I will, and have dozens of times, kick people out mid to end project if they are found to be a pestilence to my senses. Sometimes I already have my mind made up to kick them out less then half of the way in, and will wait to strand them towards the very end so they are left scrambling. The last part is only if they are really revolting to me though.

you and me both brother.  Sometimes, it bothers me, but at the end of the day they pay me really well to do almost nothing.  I look at it as if I'm "taking advantage of the man" *
