This is a scenario I've been tossing around in my head for a while but for the life of me can't work out properly.

Say that Mario Cuomo runs in 1992 and wins the nomination, selecting Bill Clinton as his running mate in a bid to unify the Democratic Party by balancing his northern liberalism with Clinton's southern moderation.

How does this ticket fare against Bush/Quayle in 1992?

President George H.W Bush/Vice President Dan Quayle (R) 285 EV's

Governor Mario Cuomo/Governor Bill Clinton (D) 253 EV's

No matter that this is the democratic dream ticket is... Cuomo will be Michael Dukakis 2.0.. He is a liberal and a governor of an eastern state.. is very uncharismatic and even has a southren vp pick in this senario Sure the recession and thats why Cuomo has more EV's  but on the other hand Bush had an approval rating of 89%... This is why Cuomo didnt ran against Bush in the first place I just cant see Cuomo win and Clinton wont help him either

and this all is without Perot

Cuomo would win a two way race (and three way also). Cuomo wins again in 1996 and Bill Clinton is elected prez in 2000.

✓ Governor Mario Cuomo (D-NY)/Governor Bill Clinton (D-AR): 318 EVs.; 51.0%
President George HW Bush (R-TX)/Vice President Dan Quayle (R-IN): 220 EVs.; 46.5%

I don't think Cuomo would have picked Bill Clinton for vice president; he needs someone from congress or with foreign policy credentials, ideally from the South. Someone like Sam Nunn, Al Gore or Lawton Chiles. Billy would have been a better choice for Attorney General.

Cuomo would have won the election, because Bush was seen as out of touch in 1992, with the economy not doing well and him trying to win a fourth consecutive term for the Republicans. Mario Cuomo was also a pretty charismatic and skillful politician.

✓ Governor Mario M. Cuomo (D-NY)/Senator Samuel Nunn (D-GA): 337 EV. (51.47%)
President George Herbert Walker Bush (R-TX)/Vice President J. Danforth Quayle (R-IN): 201 EV. (46.82%)

Bush/Quayle:    275 EV    49.4%
Cuomo/Clinton: 263 EV    49.9%

Perot not in the race allows Bush to pick off about 5% more of the Perot voters than Cuomo does and it makes the difference in a close election.

Also Quayle gets destroyed by Howard Dean in 2000
