Texas governor George W. Bush forms exploratory committee

The son of former president George H.W. Bush and current governor of Texas announced a exploratory committee Sunday afternoon, a strong indication that the governor is attempting to follow his father's footsteps. In his announcment he vowed to "set an optimistic and hopeful tone" and avoid "the petty politics of personal destruction". Bush didn't mention any specific issue, but he outlined a philosophy of lowering taxes, redusing the government and touted "compassionate conservatism" as a major part of his campaign.

Current polls has the governor leading all of his potential GOP rivals.

Former governor of Massachusetts Bill Weld announces presidential run

Former governor of Massachusetts (1991-1997) Bill Weld announced Saturday morning a run for the presidency, he had already filed papers necessary to run. In his speech he touted his record as governor and a prosecutor under the Reagan administration, he would "set partisanship aside" and went on a range of issues, his major campaign issues were reducing government regulations, reduce wasteful spending, tough on crime, lowering taxes and promoted his moderate stances on social issues such as his support for abortion rights, gay rights and gave support for legalization of medical marijuana. Standing beside him was governor Cellucci and businessman Mitt Romney, who both shortly after the speech endorsed him.

Senator Helms (R-NC) denounces Weld, warns the GOP not to elect "radicals"

One of Weld's longtime rivals, senator Helms, a influential figure in the republican party, blasted the governor's record during a segment on Meet the Press, saying that nominating Weld would betray the GOP's core base and values. This isn't the first time Weld and Helms have clashed roads, Helms effectively destroyed Weld's chances to become ambassador to Mexico in 1997 after he refused to give him a hearing on his nomination.
