Rick Santorum is a colossal douchebag, I'm happy for him that his Daughter pulled through though.

I'll bet Bella doesn't think he's a douchebag.

That ought to count for something when you think about it.  Rick Santorum walks a walk that would make many people here crap in their pants if they were actually faced with the same situation.

Personally, as a member of the LGBT community, you saying that to me is like saying George Wallace had children. Sure, he was still a terrible man.

Never the less, I don't yearn to politicize this. Great, good for the kid!

It certainly helps if you’re a millionaire.

I can’t quite imagine Bella Santorum having got this far if her dad were a taxi driver or something.  But that’s the health”care” system we have, I guess.

I will agree with you in that I thought similar thoughts when Santorum was opposing Obamacare.

I'm very glad Rick santorum's wife exercised her legal right to choose giving birth. If he and his ilk supported Universal Health Care, more women would do so.

He's a rich man with great health insurance from his job.

Too bad he opposes tooth-and-nail making sure the other Bellas in America can get the healthcare they need, even if their parents aren't rich senators-turned-lobbyists.

I can think of another PA politician whose daughter also wasn't supposed to survive what conventional wisdom says is a terminal illness: Joe Sestak.

I would gladly give these children a hug if by some chance I get to meet them someday, regardless of their fathers' political viewpoints.

Didn't he support something like that in the 1990's before opposing it?

Very true, and a point that should be made.

Unfortunately, that point is, too often, made to justify infanticide abortion.

God smiles on the righteous. Santorum is a sometimes misguided, but also misunderstood person.

I'm very glad Rick santorum's wife exercised her legal right to choose giving birth. If he and his ilk supported Universal Health Care, more women would do so.

Unlikely that in these circumstances, under a universal healthcare system, that such expensive and low-chance measures would be paid for. In some systems, they may not even be authorized when paid for out-of-pocket.

Using this girl to promote an anti-abortion agenda is disgusting.  She was born into insanely unlikely financial circumstances that allowed for exorbitant amounts of money to be spent to keep her alive.

We have a healthcare system that would deprive her of such care in nearly every circumstance.  Yet you would want to force a poor mother of someone like Bella to give birth, incur debilitating medical expenses that would stop at some point due to inability to pay, and then be forced to watch her daughter suffer and die.

I sincerely pray to God that Bella is a lesbian, because I want Rick Santorum to have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to raise up a hellbound abomination.

You claim you support some kind of universal healthcare and are given an approximate choice at the voting booth to work towards that goal...but you say no.  Instead, you vote for A system where personal wealth means your dud of a child will be raised up and used as an example for the good, Godly pro-lifers while the children of the poor are neglected..and if not while children, certainly once they make it to adulthood.

“16Then the LORD said to Moses, 17“Say to Aaron, ‘For the generations to come, none of your descendants who has a physical defect may approach to offer the food of his God.

18No man who has any defect may approach—no man who is blind, lame, disfigured, or deformed; 19no man who has a broken foot or hand, 20or who is a hunchback or dwarf, or who has an eye defect, a festering rash, scabs, or a crushed testicle.

21No descendant of Aaron the priest who has a defect shall approach to present the offerings made by fire to the LORD. Since he has a defect, he is not to come near to offer the food of his God. 22He may eat the most holy food of his God as well as the holy food, 23but because he has a defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, so as not to desecrate My sanctuaries. For I am the LORD who sanctifies them.’”

Here's how the mother of one of the few people to survive into adulthood with Edward's Syndrome describes her son's life:

Quote

When Donnie turned 21 in 2013, his geneticist believed that he was the oldest survivor with Edward's Syndrome. He died just over a year later at the age of 22.

My intuitions run contrary to the commonplace that life of this sort constitutes a "miracle," although I understand why others feel differently. The stakes involved are horrible: A massacre of innocents vs. condemning them to the torments described above.

Consider the terms in which Donnie's mother rejects the idea that he is a "vegetable."

Not an easy account to read, whether you react with admiration or a mounting sense of horror.

You are generally a good poster to begin with, so please take this as a compliment for which it is meant that this is perhaps your best ever. I'm literally tearing up. Thank you.

Oh, what a charming turn this thread has taken since the last time I posted.

As someone who does in fact think highly of Averroës' posts, this one is f**king creepy.  The misery porn that passes for compassion to the disabled, all culminating in the "hmm, wouldn't they maybe be better off if we just killed them? Just asking" do make me pretty emotional, but for different reasons than Badger.

And then, of course, there's Snowguy's fantasy about of using a child to get back at an (admittedly awful) politician. But it's for a woke cause, so it's all good. Smiley

FTR, maybe I totally misread it, but I did not read his post one bit as implying, maybe we should kill them all. Quite the opposite. We'll have to agree to disagree.

We all know you'd be singing a different tune if her name was Bella Sanchez.

My sympathy for the children involved in being detained after illegally crossing the border is tempered by the need to enforce our immigration laws for the benefit of American citizens.

Kids pay for adult screwups.  That's a fact of life.  Mom gets drunk while pregnant, child develops Fetal Alcohol Syndrome:  Kids pay.  Mom or Dad steal tons of money for drugs, go to prison, leaving their kids in foster care:  Kids pay.  I can go on and on about this.  And, yes, Barron Trump will pay some in life for his Dad's more stupid comments, however just or unjust that is.

Perhaps that's the message people who would cross our border illegally need to get BEFORE they attempt (and fail).  Bringing your children along with you when you illegally enter this country shoudn't bring you a reward.  If it does, more and more people, progressively, will try to crash our borders.  Somehow, I think that's what a majority of folks at Atlas are rooting for.

You wouldn't think a thread about a child not dying of a debilitating disease would get vitriolic and hateful, but here we are.
