So unless I am forgetting anything, other than having signed a large tax cut bill primarily benefiting the extremely wealthy, this is probably Trump's biggest accomplishment so far in his Presidency? No wall, no Obamacare repeal. But this.

Sure, but we have systems in place that prevent them from doing it basically all of the time, and we shut them down. On purpose.

This sort of thing is why the Continuing Resolution Process needs to be reformed to prevent the government from shutting down. And seriously, was there ever a time when a shutdown didn't end in an embarrassing failure for the party that instigated it?

Terrible. I would hope that money is raised to help the recovery.

Tragic, but will a single Trump supporter care?

It's anecdotal, but I know at least one individual who would probably count here.

So if NYC abolished its police department and had a big crime wave as a result, would dead0man and Del shrug if off and say "blame the criminals," rather than blaming the people who abolished the police?

I agree with this statement. The sun setting of appropriations was meant to reign in monarchies through the power of the purse, but since our elected officials are too irresponsible, the only solution is automatic CR of some sort when funding lapses.

Huh

This issue has nothing to do with monarchies. We didn't allow funding to lapse just because an appropriations bill hadn't been passed until during the Carter administration.

yes...well, not so much "rather than", more like "primarily"

For each individual crime, the person comitting the crime bares most of the responbility for that crime.....like 98% of it.

The people who damaged the park are to blame for their actions, but the door was opened by the shutdown. Government shutdowns are a terrible idea and should be avoided.

The presence of destructive morons in life is as well known and established since before mankind learned to walk erect. That's why we have such things as a National Park Service in police to keep such inevitable idiots from being destructive.

But for the shutdown and the resulting absence of Park Service employees, this destruction would not have occurred.

I hope that people who did the damage be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for the damage that they did. There are people stupid enough to download videos of themselves doing the damage... and I would like to see them lose bank balances, cars, real estate, and other assets.

I know a rule about enjoying the Great Outdoors from being a Boy Scout -- leave what you enjoyed in Nature in as good a condition as you encountered it so that someone else can enjoy it. I recognize that Donald Trump is far too undisciplined a person to have ever been a successful Boy Scout and that he might never have caught onto that concept.

Advice to anyone: if you want a souvenir from a National or state park, then bring your camera along and take some photographs.

We are finding out the hard way that the Trump style of leadership is an unmitigated disaster for America, the only good of the Trump administration going to insiders who profiteer from economic looting.

A process like this is used in many states. IL has extensive continuing appropriations in statute from  bond payments to pensions to transfers to local government. They are so extensively used that combined with court-ordered payments, over 90% of the state continued to run during the two year budget impasse that ended in 2017.
