The 2012 field was much crazier, the nominee just happened to be less crazy and the entire process wasn't as 'tainted' with craziness. The 2016 candidates were mostly sane but incompetent, and then you had Trump being successful from the get-go. So the process in 2016 was crazier. Don't think Fiorina was crazy, btw.

Yeah, Bachmann and Cain were crazy. I remember at the time thinking if either of them got the nomination, I was going to vote for Obama.

That being said, I did prefer the main candidates in 2012 to the ones in 2016 for the most part.

Hard to say. I feel like 2012 was crazier overall, because in 2012 the only real "mainstream" sorts of candidates were Romney and Huntsman, while all the rest were kind of out there.

In 2016 the crazy candidates were even further out there, but overall the field had a lot of mainstream candidates, Rubio, Kasich, Bush, Fiorina, Walker, Jindal, and Pataki were all pretty mainstream and uncontroversial, and you also had candidates like Cruz, Christie, and maybe Carson who were probably closer to mainstream than say, Bachmann, Gingrich, or Santorum were in 2012.

The 2012 field is smaller as well so it is kind of hard to say, but I think the big difference is that the crazies crowded each other out in 2012, allowing the mainstream to win the nomination, while in 2016 the exact opposite happened.

2012 had more crazy candidates, but 2016 had a crazy candidate who happened to be the frontrunner, the nominee, and the winner of the presidential election.

The GOP was in full throes of Obama Derangement Syndrome in 2012, which only got worse when they lost the election.

By 2016, they were mostly just happy he was leaving office and were giddy with being able to concern-troll incessantly about HILLARY'S SECRET EMAILS.

Also, remember that the 2012 primary included a debate where a question from a gay soldier prompted booing from the audience and Ron Paul responded to question about providing emergency medical treatment to an uninsured patient with, "Let him die!"

The 2016 primary, weirdly enough, resulted in the most crazy and unorthodox candidate (Trump) repeatedly saying we needed an insurance program that "takes care of everybody" and largely ignored social issues (that did not relate to racial grievance). The GOP had by and large come to terms with losing the war on LGBT issues post-Obergefell.

Not a fan of Cain, but he's a policy wonk compared to Trump or Carson.

Yeah, while he is a colorful character, he's not crazy like Bachmann or Carson.

2016. The 2012 field seemed crazier at the time, but that's just because the Overton Window has shifted since then.

The 2012 field featured people booing a gay soldier, applauding that a guy without healthcare died, a tax policy literally based on a pizza advertisement, and this video, that was so funny at the time because it made sense in the context of the 2012 field:

Pretty much what David said ... and Herman Cain was the man.  Still an epic addition to the library of .gifs.
