I've read a bunch of articles saying that less teenagers drive today than in prior decades.

1. Maybe good for the climate? No idea.
2. Indicative of the (apparent) decreasing social need to see people face-to-face. I don't view this as a good development because, while decreased human contact does reduce crime (along with other forms of deviance), it nevertheless allows for greater dehumanization of those we technically share a country with, but decreasingly share actual space with. I have a pet theory that this is why, while overall crime rates might remain low, there nevertheless are dangerous "one-offs" designed for mass media audiences (see: school shootings). In a prior world, these people's energies would have been channeled different.

So, I guess, overall negative.

When I was in high school, I didn't drink, didn't smoke, didn't go to parties, was a virgin, and didnt get my drivers license until the very end. Instead I spent most of my time on the computer. At that time I thought I was a one-off freak. Now everyone's doing it.

Horrible trend. For me, getting my license was a ticket to freedom.

Freedom trend.

A few less morons & jerks on the road the better, a few more parking spaces open, the better. Not even going into the environmental impact.

I got my permit after undergrad started...and it was hell getting everything down, voting was much easier.

The only thing worth missing is stick shift.

Who cares what the opinions of others are on this? Why do our opinions on this matter? What's the point of this thread, this question?

As a parent that has to drive his >16 yo kids around all the dame time (have had to for years now), it kind of funking sucks.  And I don't get it.  Getting my license to liberty was THE NUMBER ONE THING.  Even ahead of girls.  Because having a car is how 16 yo boys think you get a girl, because it's often true.  Or at least it was....maybe that's part of it?

I am 18 in literally a few weeks and I am dragging my feet. My sister and parents drive me everywhere. They really don't like it. My parents are trying to drag me to get a license though.

Anyways, freedom trend.

I just got my instructor's permit when I turned 18, and it's definitely something I wish I had two years ago. I hate being totally dependent on my parents to get me anywhere, and I want freedom. (Sane)

It's not good for the environment if you're still getting driven around in cars.  Worse actually.

Extremely bad. Almost 25 and I am reliant on my parents to drive 60-90 minutes often both ways to get me to any suburban gathering. All too frequent. Objectively a bad thing.

Self driving technologies needed to arrive a decade ago. Wonder just how many will be priced out of the market.

Big Freedom trend. It had definitely started in the early 200s--I'd say maybe half my high school graduating class had a liscence and I wasn't one of them. Trains, busses, and bikes work just fine. Even today, I don't own a car, and the world is better off for it. Cars are a big problem in American society, and their importance really needs to decline.

I couldn’t wait to get my license when I turned 16. I totally agree with what dead0man said here. For some reason, most of the weird people I went to school with didn’t have their license and still don’t.

Negative trend.

Being able to drive has increased my freedom massively.

As someone who lives in a small town, it is very limiting not to be able to drive. Whenever I wanted to go somewhere, I had to beg my Mum, who is always very busy and most of the time I'd be stuck, or I'd have to get the bus, which is too expensive.

It'd be interesting to break the results of this down by town/city vs small town/rural people.

Freedom trend, I guess? I am 16 and have my license. It's fun to drive, and I don't even live in a particularly far out suburban area. But I know a lot of people who have deferred getting their license, and that's their choice that I respect. The process is not that simple in Virginia, you have to invest a good chunk of time into classes and practice.

Sad! Although I rest assured that when I'm old, my ability to drive stick, along with my ability to write cursive, will be seen as artisanal skills of a bygone era.
