Reform Party 2000 Primary

Former Connecticut Senator and Governor Lowell Weicker - 32%
Virginia 6th District Representative Pat Buchanan - 30%
Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura - 24%
Former California 12th District Representative Ed Zschau - 14%

In which Perot gets a higher percentage of the vote in 1992 and 1996 and parlays his strength into a legit third party that wins a number of seats in Congress as well as a few statewide positions.

Weicker: Ran a center-of-the-road campaign taking moderate stances on most issues and opposing Buchanan's outward social conservatism. He emphasized healthcare reform, supporting small businesses, paying down the debt, and a responsible foreign policy as his main issues and performed well in metropolitan areas and across most of the Northeast.
Buchanan: Ran a firey bid similar to his 1996 GOP primary campaign and the one that got him elected as the 6th District Representative in 1992, a position he returned to in 1998. Socially hard-right, against free trade, against immigration, etc.
Ventura: Anti-establishment campaign emphasizing tax reform, infrastructure investment, and an isolationist foreign policy. Ventura did well in the Midwest and out West, as well as with younger voters.
Ed Zschau: Ran a similar campaign to Weicker but based around embracing free trade and paying down the debt along with investing in technology, much in the same vein as Richard Lamm's 1996 bid against Perot but adapted to his personal style. Did well out west but had his thunder stolen by Weicker elsewhere.

A Conservative Primary Challenge to Obama

United States President Barack Obama - 85%
Mississippi 4th District Representative Gene Taylor - 15%

After the 2010 midterm wipeout, a number of conservative Democrats grew upset with the direction of the administration and the party at large. This small group decided on a primary challenge to the incumbent President with the hope of pushing him to the center. Gene Taylor, who barely held on in 2010 and touted his voting for John McCain in 2008, was announced as the candidate early on, and he campaigned mostly in conservative-leaning states where ancestral Democrats remain a decent voting coalition. Taylor also picked up a few endorsements. West Virginia 1st District Representative Mike Oliverio and Oklahoma 2nd District Representative Dan Boren were among his most vocal backers. Dan Lipinski (IL-03) and Collin Peterson (MN-08) refused to endorse the sitting President as well. Former Representatives Walt Minnick (ID-01), Lincoln Davis (TN-04), Jim Marshall (GA-08), Robert Marion Berry (AR-01), Bobby Bright (AL-02), and Parker Griffith (R, AL-05) endorsed the upstart ticket as well.

A Brewer in the White House
In the midst of an economic slowdown and wreaked by the fallout of a botched response to COVID-19, the Democrats united around Former Colorado Governor, who turned surprising wins in Iowa and New Hampshire into resounding success on Super Tuesday. After receiving the endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden, who decided not to run as well as former candidates Governor Steve Bullock, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Senator Kamala Harris, Hickenlooper soared in the polls. In a battle with Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, he won enough moderate voters to prevail as the nominee.

Simultaneously, the country's economy continued to decline. Numerous Republicans declined to endorse the Trump campaign, which fended off a challenge from former Arizona Senator Jeff Flake in the primary. After much speculation, Mike Pence was kept on the ticket. However, the American public was decidedly frustrated and rewarded Hickenlooper with a big win.

Fmr. Governor John Hickenlooper/Senator Tammy Duckworth - 321
President Donald Trump/Vice President Mike Pence - 217

Turns out Buddy Roemer was hoping to win the 1991 Gubernatorial election in part because he wanted to run in 1996. Here's what that might have looked like. Here, Roemer runs as a reformist Republican and does better in the South and West than Dole did. However, he struggles to overcome Bill Clinton's campaign, and Perot drags back on his totals.

President Bill Clinton/ Vice President Al Gore - 325
Former Louisiana Governor (1987-1995) Buddy Roemer/AZ Senator John McCain - 213
Ross Perot/Pat Choate - 0

2020 Jefferson Election

Social Democrats - 34%
Conservative Party - 29%
Liberty Alliance - 27%
Pacific Greens - 15%
Center Party - 4%
Raza Unida Party- 1%

Social Democrats: Led by Caddy McKeown (SD-Coos Bay), this center-left party has historic roots among organized labor. In recent years, it has become more based in urban areas but still carries significant strength in timber communities and mining areas. It retains more traditional views on firearm ownership and other cultural issues like immigration while supporting subsidized tuition, infrastructure development, and fairer taxes. A newer faction in the party led by Audrey Denney (SD-Chico) seeks to push the group leftward to undercut the Greens.
Conservative Party: Bev Clarno (CP-Klamath Falls) moved to Jefferson 40 years ago from Oregon and ascended to the leadership through a long career. A pragmatist at heart, she and her party defend center-right positions and work well with other parties. They're pro-timber but respect the need for some environmental conservation too. The party is supportive of free trade with the US and other countries and seeks to lower taxes.
Liberty Alliance: Dallas Heard (LA-Roseburg) is the young leader of the Liberty Alliance, taking the place of Art Robinson (LA-Cave Junction). Cultivating links with border militia groups, he has attracted controversy. Heard's party stands unequivocally for gun rights, against immigration, against environmental regulation, against trade with the US, and against large government. The Liberty Alliance does best in rural areas.
Pacific Greens: The true left-wing party in Jefferson, the Greens have grown over the last 25 years from a loose coalition of environmentalists to a true force on the coast and in some ski towns. Dan Hamburg (G-Ukiah) leads the party and has committed to working with the Social Democrats where possible. However, they diverge in being the most prominent voices for environmental regulation, supporting strict gun control, MMT-based economics, and opening Jefferson up to large refugee flows.
Center Party: Small, new outfit led by a breakaway, Paul Dhanuka (CEN-Reading) from the Conservative Party who wants to see more cooperation with the tech sector to modernize Jefferson. Mainly neoliberal agenda and do best in the suburbs. Control a few mayoral spots in resort areas and one Reading Assembly Seat.
Raza Unida Party: Represents the small Latino minority in Jefferson. No elected officials beyond a few school board members in the former California portion.

America First Party Primary, 2020

In its 2020 Presidential primary, the America First Party nominated Tulsi Gabbard for President after a hotly contested race.

Tulsi Gabbard (HI-SEN) - 33%
Josh Hawley (MO-SEN) - 31%
Thomas Massie (KY-05) - 23%
Jesse Ventura (Fmr. MN-GOV) - 13%

Gabbard ran towards the party's left, sweeping up support from Kucinich 2012 backers and younger voters as well as more moderate working-class voters turned off by Hawley's evangelical right-wing views. Emphasizing a message both conservative and pragmatic, she leveraged her combat experience and work with other parties in the Senate to unite various elements of the America First Party. Her platform included support for environmentalism, a family subsidy, antitrust enforcement, wall street reform, border security, and nuclear non-proliferation. Gabbard, in presenting a bold platform for restoring deindustrializing areas, attracted support from the Rust Belt voters Hawley thought he would win. Additionally, the rejection of Trump's loss 4 years ago helped her beat Hawley, associated with the former nominee.

Hawley ran to Gabbard's right on social issues and won many rural areas, especially in the South. His platform included far more drastic cuts to legal immigration, breaking up big tech, education reform, exiting the WTO, and tax cuts for the middle class. Hawley was widely seen as a protege of 3-time party nominee Patrick Buchanan and 2012 nominee Walter Jones Jr, conservative on social issues and more populist on economics. However, Hawley was also associated with Donald Trump after he (then Missouri Lt. Governor) endorsed Trump in 2016 early in the primary. This damaged his support due to Trump's performance and to boot, many of Trump's voters picked Ventura this election, leaving Hawley fall just short of a victory.

Thomas Massie ran as part of the party's localist wing, emphasizing decentralization of government, enhanced whistleblower protection, withdrawal from the UN, and an end to the Federal Reserve. His late surge was not expected, although perhaps it should have been with the level of support from the party's liberty-loving faction. Living on an organic farm in Kentucky, Massie campaigned frequently with Ron Paul, the renowned Texas Congressman who engineered the relatively successful America First-Libertarian unity ticket of 2004. Massie also enjoyed the support of author and poet Wendell Berry, one of the most beloved America Firsters.

Finally, rounding out the field was Former Minnesota Governor Jesse Venture, who ran an anti-establishment bid with eclectic positions. Ventura sought not just the legalization of marijuana (a position shared with less zeal by Tulsi Gabbard and Thomas Massie) but the decriminalization of all drugs, aggressive antitrust enforcement, a balanced budget amendment, and land use reform. His brash style, echoing Trump's, made up for his lack of institutional support and allowed him to cut into Josh Hawley's margins.

Republic of California, Green Party Primary

Ro Khanna - 29%
Gayle McLaughlin - 27%
Matt Gonzalez - 24%
Daniel Hamburg - 19%

In the Green Party's primary leading up to the 2020 Republic of California election, Congressman Ro Khanna prevailed over Former Richmond Mayor and National Board of Education member Gayle McLaughlin as well as San Francisco Councilmember Matt Gonzalez and Former Congressman (and current NGO head) Daniel Hamburg. Gonzalez and Hamburg split the left-wing of the party, while McLaughin had broad appeal and Khanna won over more moderate Greens. Hamburg's campaign, in particular, appealed to rural areas although he barely lost his own home county thanks to Gonzalez overperforming. His main issues were drug legalization and a dovish foreign policy, but Hamburg also supported the decentralization of government. McLaughlin focused on police defunding, community development, free college, and a crackdown on abusive banking practices. Gonzalez pushed the hardest line on police issues and openly campaigned on reparations and an eco-socialist platform. Finally, Khanna ran on a tech-savvy agenda based on UBI, hard drug decriminalization, and privacy rights. His campaign was decidedly more moderate but Khanna's leadership in Congress led him to appeal to a decently sized swath of the party.

The Green Party has come close to winning a number of state offices in recent years by broadening its appeal in suburban communities and staking out less aggressive stances on issues like opposition to mandatory vaccination and GMOs. In part due to difficulties among minority voters and working-class voters generally, they remain the third-largest party in California, just behind the center-right Republican Party and a ways back of the centrist to center-left Democratic Party. They hold substantially more seats than the fourth party, the right-wing Popular California Coalition. The Green Party is set to moderate some under Ro Khanna, which may help them.
