The 2008 Democratic National Convention will be held from Monday, Aug. 25 through Thursday, Aug. 28 after the Summer Olympics in Beijing, Democratic chairman Howard Dean announced Friday.

Democrats will decide where they will hold the the convention sometime after the 2006 midterm elections, party spokesman Josh Earnest said. Dean will appoint a committee to consider bids from various cities and come up with a recommendation, Earnest said.

The Summer Olympics in Beijing are set to start Aug. 8 and run for about two weeks.

Republicans have not yet announced the dates of their 2008 national convention and don't expect to announce them anytime soon. They will pick a site selection committee in January, said GOP spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt.

Republicans will still hold the "post-convetion bounce" advantage, since they will hold theirs after the Democrats' again.

They will also get their bounce heading into the post labor day polls too.

Doesn't the order switch every four years? Don't the Republicans have to have theirs before the Democrats in 2008?

No.  The party in the White House gets to go last.

I don't care about the dates. I want some possible locations to be talked up. Denver is definetley in the running for either party, in my opinion, but I don't want to see either convention there.

I say both parties have it in one city this time, since there will be no incumbant.  Smiley  hahaha

I have come up with the ideal plan to decide convention locations.

Starting in 2008, the parties will hold their conventions in states alphabetically.

Here is the schedule.  The party holding their convention in that particular state will choose the host city in that state.

2008
Dem  Alabama
Rep   Alaska

2012
Dem  Arizona
Rep   Arkansas

2016
Dem  California
Rep   Colorado

2020
Dem  Connecticut
Rep   Delaware

2024
Dem    Florida
Rep     Georgia

2028
Dem    Hawaii
Rep     Idaho

2032
Dem    Illlinois
Rep     Indiana

2036
Dem    Iowa
Rep     Kansas

2040
Dem    Kentucky
Rep     Louisiana

2044
Dem    Miane
Rep     Maryland

2048
Dem    Massachusetts
Rep     Michigan

2052
Dem    Minnesota
Rep     Mississippi

2056
Dem    Missouri
Rep     Montana

2060
Dem    Nebraska
Rep     Nevada

2064
Dem    New Hampshire
Rep     New Jersey

2068
Dem    New Mexico
Rep     New York

2072
Dem    North Carolina
Rep     North Dakota

2076
Dem    Ohio
Rep     Oklahoma

2080
Dem    Oregon
Rep     Pennsylvania

2084
Dem    Rhode Island
Rep     South Carolina

2088
Dem    South Dakota
Rep     Tennessee

2092
Dem    Texas
Rep     Utah

2096
Dem    Vermont
Rep     Virginia

2100
Dem    Washington
Rep     West Virginia

2104
Dem    Wisconsin
Rep     Wyoming

The next set of election cycles will see each state get the party they didn't have the last time, therefore

2108
Rep     Alabama
Dem    Alaska

Etc.

This way, each state will have the opportunity to host one of the national conventions, every 100 years.  Smiley

This will make 2008 Historical.
Normally the out party goes first holding a convention in late July/early Aug then their candidate gets 2-4 weeks to campaign before the incumbant party has a convention.   During the second convention the other candidate takes a vacation (Kerry went wind surfing).  Then both parties ramp up for the unofficial start of the campaign on Labor day.
In 2008 either the Republicans will go 1 or two weeks after labor day (Sep 1) or they might go before the Democrats, or they coudld go at the same time: all woudld be novel.

My bet they hold their convention in Mid Sep, post labor day and the Democratic candidate won't take a vaction because its after labor day.

Any other predictions for what the GOP wil do and what the Democratic response will be?

The Dems should hold it in New Orleans....

But that would be exploiting a tragedy for political gain.  The voters would see right through it (Or would they... Tongue)

Oh, don't worry. The media and the Republicans would see to it that they saw through it.

I think Phoenix would be a good location, large city in a relatively competitive state. It also doesn't have a reputation as a liberal stronghold, like Boston did.

I've mentioned this before and will say it again: Phoenix is absolutely brutal in August.  Unbearable, highs of as much as 110.

Sounds like a good choice for the Republicans, the protesters can enjoy chanting in the heat!
