What is Delaney's goal in this vanity run? I can't imagine he's delusional enough to believe he has a chance. Is he hoping to get a bit of exposure so that he can be a national figure rather than just an obscure Congressman from Maryland? I'm perplexed.

All I can think of is that the campaign is some sort of financial instrument. But I can't think of any way that throwing away money on a presidential campaign would get you out of paying taxes or whatever. Maybe it's a money laundering scheme, idk. Or something along what Carson did in 2016.

Or maybe he just really is that delusional.

My guess would be gubernatorial or senatorial run, without having to languish in the House while waiting for it.

More likely he'd end up like Thad McCotter.

Seems like the most likely answer. He probably got bored of being in the House and knew that he wouldn't have been able to beat Hogan, so he figured he could just spend his personal fortune on a vanity presidential run and wait for the governor's mansion to open up in 2022.

He literally would have won the primary and then beat Hogan in the 2018 general if he ran.

Eh, why not? He can do whatever he wants. He isn't going to win a single delegate, so why not rock the boat a little?

Add Delaney to the list of Democratic nominees I'd back! Delaney, Bloomberg, Hillary, McAuliffe, Schultz, Biden, Klobuchar. Terrific list! I'm still not entirely sure about Biden and Klobuchar though.

To run for office you have to be a bit of a narcissist, Delaney seems a bigger one than most maybe even more so than Trump.

Presumably he knows that he's going to completely bomb, get nowhere, and will ultimately be able to drop out before qualifying for House commences (I'm assuming he hasn't stated he won't run for re-election?).

So yeah: somebody who is as rich as he is can afford to have a vanity run to boost his name rec for future campaigns. However, I'd say a better investment on balance would be some plugs or a really nice toupee.

He's already out of the House. Didn't run in 2018.
