This has always irked me a lot about her. Harris not only handled truancy by...prosecuting the parents of the kids skipping school, something that should be unconstitutional, she actually boasted about it and campaigned on it. So proud of family separation, and massive fines on already struggling families and then locking up parents who couldn't afford them. Its not only disgusting, its something she bragged about!

Forgive my ignorance from across the pond, is truancy illegal for parents in the US and what are the usual consequences in most states?

Here in the UK it is and the most likely consequence is a fine, but you can be prosecuted and go to prison for three months if you don't pay or are a repeat offender.
