Is this a first, for someone to be sworn into the Senate on the constitution?

Also, will this be a good indicator of what Simena's voting record will look like?

Sinema is agnostic, so she uses the consitution instead of the Bible. Nothing to see here. As for her future voting record, she has served in the house for six years, so her views are not really a secret.

And, as Kirsten Gillibrand will kindly remind people, voting records change from the House to the Senate.

Good, this is how it should be. You're following the Constitution when you hold elected office, not the Bible.

I doubt it. We even had a president do this in the 1800s (Pierce) - Imagine the reaction from the Evangelicals today if President O'Rourke or Harris or whoever did that in 2021!!

True, but remember that Gillibrand represents New York and Sinema represents Arizona. She probably can shift her record to the left a bit, but I don’t see Sinema moving significantly to the left right now.

Congresswoman Tlaib was also sworn in on a copy of the Qu'ran owned by Thomas Jefferson.

Unless Arizona goes the route of Colorado, she'll probably retain her voting record as a moderate, but she definitely won't go Manchin on us.

If I ever got elected, I'd swear in on The Message.

Anyway McSally swore in on something better, and actually the coolest book of anyone who swore in:

She's swearing on the Constitution that she will uphold the Constitution?   Isn't that sort of circular?

When Teddy Roosevelt was sworn in as president, it was in a relatively panicked circumstance (McKinley had just been killed) and there was no Bible on hand, so they just swore him in without one. That was over 110 years ago and already showing that the Bible isn't necessary for an oath of office.

Similarly LBJ was sworn in on a Catholic missal because that's all that was available.

Theoretically this problem would not exist today: One could just be sworn in on a smartphone with a Bible app on it.

How do they change when your state is more conservative than your district?

Frankly, swearing on the Bible strikes me as sacrilegious.

Simena probably moves slightly to the right, at least until Arizona really starts moving left.

This is the way it should be. Every officeholder should be sworn in on the constitution and not a religious book.

I don’t know, there’s something quintessentially American about letting people use different significant texts to swear in. It shows that regardless of their creed, elected representatives are fighting for the same goals and common good.

In theory, that is.

You're not represented by her. You're a French citizen who does not reside in Arizona, I am not represented by non-denominational Christian Senators from states other than Minnesota.

Every time this is done people act as if it’s never been done before.  There are numerous instances of senators and representatives being sworn in without the use of a Bible.  Both John Quincy Adams and Franklin Pierce were sworn in as president on law books.

Swearing-in ceremonies should only use a copy of the Constitution anyway, not the Bible.

The US is not a Christian Nation with Christianity as state religion and it's unfair for those of other religions and the atheists/agnostics.

On the other hand, if Christianity was the state religion in the US (with an amendment in the US constitution), then the Bible and the Constitution could be used.
