This man has the largest brain I've ever seen. The GOP really needs to sort this out, it has too many incumbents who are just liabilities like Blunt and Tillis, and the ones who aren't liabilities like Toomey are retiring lol

Here's a nuclear take on affairs:  They can actually help male politicians by making them seem sexy and desirable, especially if the male is good-looking and the affair is with a young, attractive woman.

Cal is a pretty good-looking guy, and Arlene Guzman Todd is smoking hot and 12 years younger than him (she's also a dead ringer for Nomiki Konst).  When voters see these texts of a young, attractive woman practically throwing herself at Cal and calling him incredibly sexy, that leaves a positive impression.  It says, this Cal guy isn't some boring, balding, late-40s generic D.  He's so desirable that pretty young married women find him irresistible.

The same was true for Bill Clinton.  The many affairs with younger women locked in the image of him as a lying, amoral cheater.  But they also created this work-hard play-hard image of Bill as a charismatic, sexy playboy.  And if we're being honest, people like that.  Especially guys, who would love to imagine themselves as a James Bond politician who brokers a peace treaty at 6 PM and has drinks with the ambassador's daughter at 9.

You really think there’s undecided voters who are looking for someone who cheated on their wife? No one thought Trump was being “sexy” or whatever when the Hollywood access tape was released, though it certainly didn’t hurt him all that much

It was naive for Republicans to expect that their officeholders wouldn't end up being idiots, when their voting base is. Now they're paying the price for it.

A) Trump looks like a microwaved Peep.
B) Sexual assault is not the same as a consenting relationship between two historically sexy adults.

that not sexual assault

I mean technically we don’t even know if Cal was cheating here. Never did any article say he planned on getting remarried or eliminating his current wife. Maybe he was just really good friends with his staffer, and was really bad at joking via text. Just because a guy is married doesn’t mean he can be good friends with a another girl. The more I think about it, the more I think all this criticism of Cal is purely speculative, and isn’t based on actual fact.

Wrong.

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Cal Cunningham was asked repeatedly Friday whether he's had other extramarital affairs aside from one confirmed this week, but he declined to answer the questions.

Cunningham's campaign scheduled a virtual news conference to discuss the need for a better response from Congress to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but every question he was asked was related to his affair with Arlene Guzman Todd, a public relations strategist from California and the wife of an Army veteran.

He acknowledged a week ago sending Guzman Todd inappropriate text messages, but she confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday that they had two in-person encounters: one in March in Los Angeles that she said did not include intimate contact and a second in July in North Carolina, where she said they were intimate.

This is a hot mess.  Fortunately, Democrats chances in NC-SEN are probably still above 50% because for obvious reasons Republicans look like massive hypocrites attacking Cummingham and we have the political wind at our backs.  The polling suggests this is true.

I made a small donation to Cummingham's campaign back in April.  I will not do that again.

Replace "Trump" with "Cunningham".

This sort of rationalization is the problem.
I agree, but it's quite satisfying to see how using this sort of rhetoric to justify supporting Trump has come back to bite the religious right in the ass so royally.

Is Todd pregnant? No. At worst they had fake intercourse through the phone or something, since people need to be social distancing anyways because of COVID-19, and Cunningham doesn’t seem like the type of person who would go out of his way to disobey social distancing.

In the context of this argument, though, it matters -- even if we say everything else is the same, a good-looking guy cheating on his spouse is more forgivable to voters than an unattractive guy cheating on his spouse. I think it's fair to say that Cunningham has a certain Martin O'Malley-esque Hot Dad energy, whilst DJT does...not.
