A lot of this thread has basically ignored the fact that much of Cunningham's appeal is him being a good guy, a military guy, an intelligent dudley do right type who properly reflects North Carolina.

The voters who will decide this election are not voting for him because he has a D next to his name or because they hope he will implement the DNC platform.

Much of his campaign is based on his personality and personal appeal. (Dems can take comfort in the fact that Tillis still has little of these).

The PPP poll showed that people aren't really changing their votes because of this. Besides, Biden has a good chance of winning the state and can drag Cunningham over the line. I can't imagine why any Biden voters would support Tillis because of this. It's not like he's running in Tennessee or Louisiana.

Even if Cal wins, it's Cawthorn's seat in 2026 anyway

If there's a Democratic president, yeah. If there's a Republican in office, all bets are off.

Lol, even in a Democratic midterm, Cawthorn isn't winning a Senate seat.  Republicans may win the seat, but not with him.

If people are willing to overlook Cal's scandals, why wouldn't they do the same with Cawthorn?

Begone, Silent Cal!

Hopefully he apologizes for his personal conduct and shifts the focus to the issues at stake in this election.

Biden needs independent and cross over voters to win North Carolina (which he very well may do). Cunningham needs those voters too.

As that PPP poll... I trust in the "fundamentals" of North Carolina voting habits, what I know about the Cunningham campaign (his personal appeal is central), and my sense of what North Carolina swing voters think about a candidate having an affair during a campaign... more than I trust in PPP, which released a poll immediately after this story first broke and the data points were presented on twitter in as optimistic a light as possible for Cunningham. Stand by, story developing imo. It will very interesting to see what his approach is tonight.

Can we stop posting videos from RNC hacks

It's from a local news channel, the first time Cunningham has spoken on camera since this scandal has broke, and is highly relevant to this race.

The video is more of a contribution to this thread than page after page of D posters saying, as fast as the PPP poll, that this scandal doesn't matter.

http://american-ledger.com/accountability/thom-tillis-ex-wife-cites-cruel-and-inhuman-treatment-in-divorce-documents/

Lmao. I had a dream last night that Tillis would have some relationship dirt that would be dug up, and lo and behold.

Quote
According to court filings obtained by American Ledger, North Carolina Republican Senator Thom Tillis’ ex-wife alleged “cruel and inhuman treatment” by Tillis, raising questions about the reasons surrounding the couple’s eventual divorce. In Tennessee, where the couple was married, “cruel and inhuman treatment” legally includes domestic violence, adultery, emotional or verbal abuse, and sexual assault.

The divorce complaint, filed in August 1979 on Tillis’ birthday, stated that Tillis was “guilty of such cruel and inhuman treatment or conduct towards the plaintiff as renders further cohabitation unsafe and improper.” The divorce filing also noted that Tillis’ ex-wife felt “unsafe and improper” living with Tillis any further because of his actions, which may include any or all of the actions outlined in the law.

I'd be a little cautious with this. There's not any actual claim of specific behavior so I don't know that this isn't just a normal divorce petition. That kind of language was common back in the stone age before no-fault divorce.

Also, there's a risk of a Sherrod Brown situation where the ex-wife still supports him politically.

I actually think that Cunningham could pretty easily keep "punting" on this. I don't think that Tillis whining about Cunningham's personal misconduct is a winning strategy in this political context. If Cunningham frames this as him trying to address issues relevant to NC while Tillis wants to be nosy and examine Cal's personal life, then that could hurt whatever Republicans are going for here.

It's unfortunate that Cunningham has turned out to be unlikable, but in the chaos of 2020, the statement "I care about the issues, my opponent only cares about private drama" is actually pretty compelling.
