Someone else ambitious for that position might have take used this opportunity to air out this information about her. Bass was good consensus builder in the Assembly and worked well even with Republicans, so she would be someone to get out of the way if you want to be Speaker.

My understanding of the wording of the August 10th deadline was it was for picking the VP (which has probably happened), not announcing them.
