He can win the primary against Cornyn as a teapartier but he would be horrible in a GE.

Texas GOP: we just saw that suburbs are massively trending against us and rural hicks are already voting for us at maximum capacity. How do we get more voters
A. Moderating rhetoric and focusing on being a buisiness friendly party with moderate socially conservative policies
B. doubling down on the rhetoric causing us to lose Tarrant county and other suburbs but gets 2 more hick voters to turnout.

OMG, if he beats Cornyn and Democrats have a good year overall, this might be the year Democrats win a Senate seat in TX.

He may have a rather good shot in the primary.

anyway even if Dan patrick loses he will force Cornyn to make crazy statements to appeal to the base. This can really cost him a lot of moderate support. Cruz was never forced to make crazy statements and generally tried to stay relatively moderate than he normally would because of Beto. Remember he sponsored an anti child seperation bill. It was obvious why. Corynyn won't have that luxury.

dan patrick is the texas LT governor. its a quite powerful position. he only won by 5 points this november and is also unpopular due to his extreme conservative positions on school funding and also social issues. Imagine mourdock 2.0

You missed the joke, person you're responding to probably knew that.

Anyway, Patrick clearly wants to move up, but I'm not sure he takes the chance at this. If he does, it'll be a very interesting primary, and a very bloody one.

Has Patrick done/said something uniquely awful or is he just a garden variety teabagger?

He's, among other things, the leading light on the push towards anti-transgender bathroom legislation.

Meh, that's pretty quaint by today's standards of the party.

If 2022 is a trump midterm and abbot retires the Texas gop will have to nominate a moderate like Strauss or Emmet to survive

This news is the only thing making me wonder whether Beto should reconsider running for president in 2020

In the October 2018 Morning Consult poll, Cruz's popularity was 49%. Cornyn's popularity was ...42%. Granted Cornyn is less known than Cruz, but the idea that he's somehow massively more popular than Cruz isn't true.

If he beats Cornyn in the Primary, Beto could probably beat him in the general, potentially even pulling the Dem presidential candidate over the line in the process, and booting Trump from the White House.

But he won his previous races by wider margins? I still think Cornyn is a stronger candidate for reelection than Cruz. If Patrick runs, I wonder whether Cruz will endorse in this race and if so who.

Beto should only run if does not for president or has to leave the race early. Hopefully Castro won't be the Democratic candidate, because he'd lose against any Republican.

Cruz has already endorsed Cornyn.

Cruz has already endorsed Cornyn.

I think that may have enough impact on the Tea Party base that Patrick would be the underdog in the primary.
