I was surprised that Mendoza did better than Frerichs, especially downstate. She eeked out her 2016 win and although voters have been very satisfied with her performance, they've also been very satisfied with Frerichs'. Add to it that he is from downstate and his opponent was much less serious than hers', and I expected Frerichs to outperform her.

Would be interested to hear any theories on why I was wrong.
