I think there's 2 reasons for this:

1.Despite despising the media, Trump craves being liked and praised above all else, and perhaps thinks he'll get good coverage from this.
2.Trump wants something to respond with when he's accused of doing nothing on gun violence. I wouldn't be surprised if a year from now he's saying things like "I've done more to stop gun violence than anyone else in history".

Yeah, that's the one. Roberts, Alito and Thomas all voted in the majority in Heller, so at a minimum they're not anti gun reactionaries. Gorsuch is more libertarian than any justice besides Thomas, and Kavanaugh, despite his philosophical faults, has been solid on the 2nd Amendment.
